oil pressure gauge/senser thread question

I would like to fit a oil pressure gauge and need advice as to a suitable gauge and senser for the 1.9n 1Y engine.Would a 12 volt gauge and senser be okay and fitted where the high pressure one is on the filter housing and also the thread size.

Oil senders tend to be 'Taper seat' rather than any standard parallel thread as used on the rest of the engine....

isn't the high pressure switch a normaly open switch? if so won't the buzzer of doom go off if you fit the pressure gauge sender in its place?.because of this i fitted my gauge sender in place of the low pressure sender.
I dont think, so I'm not[do I exist?]

I am having problems with the high pressure curcuit i replaced the board but the buzzer & warning light still dont work.So am considering a oil pressure gauge and its sender as an alternative.

I took the dashboard off and did some tests for electrical continuity on the ribbon circuit .Behind the temp gauge the ribbon appears cut this goes to no 5 on the connector.As i said i replaced the dop board but the high pressure oil warning buzzer still dont work.Image Could this be the problem?

Camper,
I had some problems with the buzzer of doom. When I first bought the van I was told, by the previous owner, that the buzzer had been sounding continuously but an old French mechanic had fixed it for him quite cheaply in spite of spending some hours doing the work.
Suspicious about what had been done, I needed to find out whether it would work.

The test is....... the circuit from the high pressure switch to pin 12 on the multi plug (1.8 on the oil pressure monitor control unit) needs to be Open and the RPM above about 2000, for the buzzer to operate.

Monsieur le mechanicien had merely earthed the H.P. circuit behind the clocks so even with an oil pressure drop at speed there would be no buzzer. :shock: :evil:

I am not familiar with the diesel engine layout but think it is generally similar to the waterboxer.
Have you tried Simon Baxter for sensor adaptors or information?

I appreciate your reply mike there is a thread which show the bentley manual discription on how to fault find the low& high pressure oil warning light& buzzer of which i followed apart from the zener diode test. The low pressure oil circuit works the oil light goes out on engine start and when the sender is earthed it flashes.I replaced the buzzer board behind the speedo the engine is diesel and checks to pin 1 on the buzzer board is 12 volts which feeds from the alternater .I tested for any broken tracks on the flexi circuit which feeds the buzzer board there is none but pin 5 on the multi plug looks like its lost its electrical connection and as can be seen on the pict the flexi track cut.This track seems to go under the zener diode i dont want to reconnect pin 5 or the track until some could look at the pict & okay it.

I only have the poor mans bible, (Mr.Haynes). But his wiring diagram shows pin 5 as the 12 volt (permanent) feed to the Clock (digital or analogue it seems)
The other connections on the buzzer board are shown as........
Pin1 the feed from the ignition coil (alternator in your case)(9 on the multipin connector) this gives the speed signal.......... remember above 2000 rpm for about 5 seconds is required to trigger the buzzer.
Pin 15 is the 12 volt supply through the ignition switch. (8 on the multipin connector)
Pin 0.3 goes to the low pressure switch (Contacts are closed with no pressure)(13 on the multipin connector)
Pin 1.8 goes to the high pressure switch (Contacts are open with no pressure)(12 on the multipin connector)
Pin A goes to the LED
And the last pin which Haynes has marked - (Negative) goes to contact 3 on the multipin connector.

If all that checks out, disconnect the wire at the high pressure switch (but do not ground it) and run the engine above 2000 rpm for more than 5 seconds and it should buzz. Sorry I don't have much else but Haynes to work with but my old bus has been fine for about 8 or 9 years since I found the fault. I was thinking of putting a push button switch on the dash to break the circuit (and get a buzz) while driving to prove the system was 'armed' so to speak.

Thanks for the info Mike i removed the instrument dash and will follow some of your help.The wiki has lots of details for the ciruit and will work through it to try to find the problem.David

If you can't find the bit you want,
Maplin have a range of Zener Diodes 0.5 to 5 watt for £0.42 or less. :idea:

Sorry for the novice question, but where abouts are the high and low oil pressure senders located on the block of a 1.7D? and is it just a case of slapping a socket on to remove?

I don't think diesels have high and low senders
AGG 2.0L 8V. (Golf GTi MkIII)

The main function of the 'Buzzer of Doom' seems to be...... to keep plenty of threads going on 80-90, and...if it is (by some slight chance)... a genuine warning signal......... to notify Wasserleaker drivers that their engines have just expired........... yet again. :run
