Why is a T25 also a T3 ?
The designation T25 also has T3 behind it in brackets. Anyone know why ? .

the 25 bit relates to the part numbers it uses too

I don't ever remember a splitty being called a t1weldore wrote:the t3 bit means its 3rd in the transporter range t1 splitty,t2 bay,t3 t25
that's how i remember beetles being designated
I find it confusing, as spme people talk type 3, which is how i know fast backs squares or notches
the same folk go the same with type 4's
for me they're t25's, althoug on occasion I've been told off for not calling them T3's
my local dealershiip, tells me fasty, notch and square parts are now obsolete, if I call and ask for something for a t3
some places you can't win

Re: Why is a T25 also a T3 ?
type 1 = old bugkevtherev wrote:here we go again...
type 2 = tranporter/van
type 3 = old notch/square/fastback..
type 4 = newer notch/square/fastback with type 4 engine
type 2 have 5 't' generations:
t1 = splits
t2 = bays
t3 (t25 in UK) = bricks/wedges
t4 (Eurovan in America) = next generation
t5 = newest
Sorry, couldn't help myself.

Re: Why is a T25 also a T3 ?
Hi everyone,
A real VW type 25 is actually a fire engine.
The "type 25" as it is called in the UK (incorrectly) actually refers to VW's model 25 which is a type 2 T3 panel van. It's a bit like calling a mk1 Polo a "type 86" (it's actually VW's model 86), which of course is nonsense.
All type 2 vehicles refer to VW Multipurpose Vehicles, which the generations have already been mentioned above, eg:-
- Type 2 T1 = Splitscreen (1953 - 1967)
- Type 2 T2 = Bay window (1968 - present)
- Type 2 T3 = Wedge (1979 - 1992, 1995 - 2003)
- Type 2 T4 = Transporter 4th Generation aka rust buckets (1993 - 2002)
- Type 2 T5 = Transporter 5th Generation aka loads of electrical problems (2003 - 2010 ??)
- Type 2 T6 = Transporter 6th Generation aka poor attempt to look like a splitty (2011 ??? - )

Re: Why is a T25 also a T3 ?
Hail thee oh mighty Volkswagen ancestry.
In the words of Johhny Cash:
I'd get it one piece at a time
And it wouldn't cost me a dime
You'll know it's me when I come through your town
I'm gonna ride around in style
I'm gonna drive everybody wild
'Cause I'll have the only one there is a round.
And as even Hammond admitted "Its the most multi-multi-purpose vehicle ever" - sadly that period is all over with most vehicles beyond the scope of the home mechanic. The T3, T25, Vanagon etc was the last of a great period in VW's history where simlicity meant less to go wrong.

Vanagon is American for t3, same as t25 is British for t3.
The first Golfs in America were called Rabbits.
Brazil built the Fox (like Jetta) and VW North America sold them for a few years (1987-1993).
