antifreeze compatibility or choice

Post by getunder »

I have completely drained my cooling system for a pipe change and did not keep old coolant. I have read the Wikis but am still not sure of compatibility or choice. I have about 2 litres left of blue G11 concentrate. Is this the obsolete Green coolant mentioned or is my Blueish G11 different ? If up to date there now appears to be G12 and G12+ available in 3 different colours, Blue, Red/Pink or Purple. Whats the difference ? If the G11 is compatible with later G12 or G12 + ones which one should I chose ? If not compatible which one should I chose to replace it with. As the engine is 24 years old anyway ( and I am 68) should I worry and go for a good quality probably cheaper branded anti-freeze. I am not sensitive about my age and accept I am now easily confused and will not be offended with ageist comments :D . yours sincerely grandad !

It is up to you if you buy the mega buck VW stuff, personally I use any good brand Phosphate Free antifreeze, in fact Halfords have a good selection of reasonably priced PF anti freeze on their shelves.

Any of the G11/12/12+ mix fine. I was told by VW you could only get G12+ now. On the bottle it says that it lasts forever, so doesn't ever need changing, so it might be worth sticking that in and then you can forget about it.

I use Comma Frostmaster a/f tis a good quality product and let's face it how many of these cooling systems stay intact for more than 3 or 4 years with being drained for some repair or other

Have just found Link on Cooling and Heating Recommended Brands Wiki. tTe problem with interpreting manufacturers advice and warnings to only use theirs is that of course in the well known phrase " they would say that wouldn't they" It's your choice, your engine !
