been a member of the caravan club for just over a year

costs around 37 quid.
12 magazines a year....which allthough 99% vw free are still a good read
sites are superb...not been to a bad one
sites are spotless.

think the snobbery bit is in your mind...the wardens are all really pleasant.

We are members of C&CC mainly for the IOW ferry reductions as in-laws are there. We did intially join the CC, and althought the wardens were OK you could see the disgust on most peoples faces as our rusty old van squealed into the site!! They also seems to have a lot of rules - which way your van faced etc.

As far as the IOW goes - if you are "using" a membership number - I suggest you go Lymington-Yarmouth rather than Portsmouth crossing as they have never checked for a card/IOW NHS ID/Westlands ID - but we did have an embarrassing moment at Portsmouth! I think generally Red Funnel is lots cheaper and has more deals. You might also be able to get a coupon offer from the County Times (I guess you can get them online) they often have good deals.

Motor insurance for me with c/c has never been beaten due to member discount and for 2 vehicles it gets even more discount

I'm fairly new to camping in a campervan having previously preferred wild tent camping. My dream camping trip would probably involve hiking with a rucksack, eating meagre rations and staying in a tiny tent in the woods. I like to think of my Westfalia as an elaborate mobile basecamp from which to explore the wilderness rather than a holiday in its own right. I'm not a big fan of holiday parks at all. I probably would only stay in a site with "entertainment" in an absolute emergency.

So is it worth joining the club if I'm just looking for rustic campsites in the middle of the wilderness?

Can I get discounts in little independant tent campsites or is it just big ones suited to motorhomes?

We stayed at Graffham site which is quite a large site but totally in the middle of a wood, each plot is surrounded by it owns trees bushes etc so you don't feel like you are on a site it definately feels woody! It is also surrounded by fields, woodland so lots of really nice walks, no entertainment, no shop, but has got goo toilet/shower facilties. This is a camping and caravanning club site and we wished to god we were members when we went there because without the membership it was very pricey. but we are members of the caravan club and can't afford to be members of two clubs! I would have to say though of all the sites we have been to this was one of my very favourites and almost worth buying the membership for.

We are members of both the CC and CCC as we find we save more than the anual membership fee by taking advantage of the various discounts they each have to offer, usually Ferries with CC and always the Arrival/RAC membership with CCC i have never found any snobishness or problems with people on either one or other of the club sites, in fact more often than not it is difficult to get away from folk wanting to rabbit about them having once owned a T25 and how they wish they still had it, pretty much the same as when i park my Classic mini amoungst a load of modern overpriced/ characterless motors.

Not sure what their game is but just renewed an insurance with same company who do caravan club and got it about £30 cheaper as a non member

I joined the CCC just to get the RAC discount, why ? because I have several classic cars (and a T25 and T2) and the arrival service allows european breakdown cover with no age limits on cars and vans. Normally vans will not be covered at any price over 10 years old and older cars at a substancial extra cost. It does work as I had to call then in Belgium once! I never actually used any of their sites though !

I have been in the C &CC for a couple of years now. Under canvas and in my camper. As said before, the certified sites are often pretty basic, but well kept, and never overcrowded. Some have hookups, loos and showers, others a tin bucket (not quite!).

Although restricted to a max of 5 units, the certified sites are allowed to hold rallies with larger groups, so it could be very possible to have a club 80-90 event at many of these sites. The trouble is - deciding which one!

I'm planning to go to a site near Rutland Water this weekend - haven't been there before - anyone know the area?
