T25 2.1 DJ engine - thermostat housing sensor question

There are two sensors located on the plastic thermostat housing, both identical - one on the side and one on the rear. Which one is relevant to the temperature gauge as this has stopped working??? Thanks very much!

IIRC It is the one towards the front of the vehicle.
