paint reaction

Post by weldore »

i dont know anything really about paint types and what works with what and what dont..just thought id clarify that !!
today ive been rubbing down the panels on the van ,the previous owner rolled on hammerite (thats what he told me anyway) and never flatted it back ,so now its been on a while its gone dull ,but the texture holds in the muck and makes it look terrible,so ive been rubbing away at it.
got it nice and smooth and went and bought a can of undercoat..that cellulose/acrylic stuff.sprayed it on and loads of crazing appeared :(
now it looks to me like its doing it where ive rubbed through the 'hammerite' and got down to the original but i could be wrong...its not a solid area it doing it ..it seems to be around the edges of the hammerite where it turns into the original paint...i think.
am i using the wrong primer or do i need to use some of that barcoat stuff ?
cheers..dave

You need a primer sealer (does both). Halfords do it in spray and brush form but don't ask them for it as they haven't a clue. Check the primers and look for the ones that also seal. Don't be tempted to flat it back as you will probably break through it, put a few coats of paint on then allow it to dry and flat that back. Any good paint factor will have primer sealant. Alternatively, take it back to bare metal and start afresh if its only a small section!

cheers angeloevs, primer sealer it is then...just beeen and tested an area again where there wernt much hammerite but only traces of it and it is the hammerite thats reacting..the original paint is ok..seems like the primer gets under the hammerite and reacts with it and lifts it off the original paint

cheers again..dave

well i went to davmac today and asked them for some primer/sealer and they said to use barcoat and to spray it on
so ive dug out me spray gun that i got with the compressor(never used it yet)
just gotta wait for a day were its not too windy and have a crack at it,wanted to do it today but twas a tad blowey
gonna do a section at a time ,theres loads of rubbing down to do but if all goes well itll be worth it and if i get me confidence up with spraying the barcoat on ill spray me wagon too :ok

still worried about how itll go tho :?
