WBX - Oil/Water Mixing & liner seals renewing Q's

Have you checked the oil cooler? they are prone to internal rot which results in oil/coolant mix.

Cheers for te suggestion Martin, but no oil cooler fitted on mine.
I had that once on my Scirocco !
(I wish it was that simple !!)

I think you may have found your problem with the water in the oil problem,,,,,,,,,,,unless the correct 'High Temperature' sealer is used on both the head/water jacket and on the head nuts during assembly then anything can happen..... general purpose RTV isn't regarded as being suitable for the VW Wasserboxer water system..

Having read the Haynes, it seems no sealant is used on the either the top or lower liner seals (I know - RTFM !)

Having now stripped this and examined it's workings, I can see no place were water and oil can mix, except the base liner seals and the studs that run into the rocker chamber. Would those "in the know" agree ?

If so, I think it might be worth fitting a full new set of seals and trying AGAIN to cure it

E D I T = mind you I have just searched some previous posts on this topic and Mr toomanytoys says :-

Oil in the water on a wbx will never come from a head, the oil is not at pressure in the heads as it comes up the pushrods under pressure... and drains back under gravity...

Barrel base seals shouldnt be a problem either as there is no pressure in the case and oil is only splashing around at that height in the engine.. in both cases the water system will be at a higher pressure than the other sides so water in oil....

If oil is getting into the water than it will be from a crack or machined part in the oil supply system in the case...

I see your point and the last bit of that (my bold italics) has me worried though

It's occurred to me that if I cannot find anywhere in the crankcase where oil and water could mix, then by default it must have been a failure of either the liner base seals or the sealing of the head studs.

Therefore a careful re-assembly with good quality seals, gaskets and the correct sealants should effect a cure.

I wonder if I should chance this course of action...

Thinking about it hard.. as suggested on a PM, is the lifter area, where the lower studs screw in there.. it there is a crack/overmachine etc, then thats about the only spot I can think of at the mo... might be worth seeing if any of the studs will unscrew (without too much force!!!!) to see if one has lots of oil around it... you could than clean it and use some sealant to seal that... not clever, but could work...

As aidan says... get an Elring kit off bricky... smear of sealnt on the base seals and the head studs...

Well I got the £250 motor off Billy, 360 mile round trip in a hired Astra van (via Leicester to sell my Hi-Fi speakers to get the money)

I took all the ancilleries off it, checked it over and cleaned it up.

Fitted it this weekend, taxed it today and went for a test drive.

So far all seems OK

Keeping fingers crossed until a suitable millage has been completed to confirm all is still good !

So I now have DF and DG engines and bits, in various states of repair, for sale !! (incl a stainless steel silencer )

I have been pm'd by an engine builder who recons the DF should be fine if put back together with all new seals etc
