draws / space under back matress?

Post by hombre »

Hi all. i hope someone could answer my question, i know it may be a bit random, my questions usually are.
I have a 1981 devon conversion t25, and under the back matress in the boot area is a home made thing that has a board on it to raise tha matress up. I havent seen inside the back on many other vans, only in passing and havent yet been to any meets etc. But Im sure ive seen and also sure theres meant to be some sort of pull out draw system under there... is this right.? could anyone shed some light or even send a picture of whats meant to be there, so i could try and source a replacment, or even build something similar, as the couple of planks fo wood there at the moment is doing my head in. Old olive is tucked up for another month or so till winter is over, so now is a good time to get building i think.
any help would be great!!!!
also briefly.. im wanting a twin exhasut.. spotted one on just kapers, it states its for 1700 and 2000. mine a 1600 engine. how different will it be, will it fit.. with some encouragment or or alteration?
thanks guys!

Very early Devon T25 models had a simple box arrangement under the rear bed mattress, with a pair of boards covering the compartments ,,,,,,these could be removed completely to gain access to the engine hatch. Later versions came with drawers.

Also the Devon layout changed each and every time a van was built, even down to the type of banana boxes they used for the cupboards.....

Hi

do you mean a box under the RnR bed over the engine?
I had a home made box in mine which I modified to be a tool holder, photos via link

hi sorry yes its the 1600 Aircooled petrol engine. Whats the code number c somwthing (i dont know to much about it) or did they change even within the same engines?
i figured might have to have it all welded different. Its a shame.. cant seem to find anywhere a place that sells twin pipes for 1600 Aircooled, always the 2000. anyone know somewhere

thanks for the link peet, thats probably spot on what my van had, as i have a board thats original, and looks like it probably fitted ontop of that box conpartment!
and thanks irishkeet, those draws look great, and think ill be making a similar system!
thanks again guys

If its a moon raker then they had the rear box as per the link Peet showed.

My box is smashed to pieces, and I'm going to have to build something to replace it with, as I doubt you can buy the replacement platic boxes now, shame as I don't really want to build one

yeh mine broke to bits too, had to make one up out of some ply. made it with a hinged top, but didn't think at the time how much of a pain it is to empty it when you want to get at the engine, shall probably change it to drawers something along the lines of what irishkeet has done. hardest bit was making it with a dropped section at the front for the r&r bed to sit flush on, least i know the bed isn't going to collapse now
