exhaust fumes in cab

I was getting an oilly smell coming through the vents. I found the rubber tube missing from the front of the alternator fan and the air intake on the rear body work. This meant fresh air was coming into the heating system rather than air from the engine bay.

Chances are that it is the heat exchanger admitting fumes via the heater but don't forget that the side area around the front of the cab generates a negative pressure when in motion and that will drag air and any fumes present from any poor seal between the engine bay and interior of the Vehicle even right up the back. I spent ages on my previous van (CF) before realising that fumes wee being sucked in through a gap in the rear wheel covers and the vehicle side panels under the seat/bed area. If this is the case then opening the side windows for some fresh air can exasterbate the problem. Whatever the cause this is a nauseous and potentially dangerous problem. Except in really hot environments I find self adhesive aluminium ducting tape very good for sealing gaps in odd shaped metal covers etc. Also good for non-cosmetic gap/hole covering and wire retaining inside or outside the vehicle body.
