Battery - Can't get it out! Help

Post by Chumbley Van »

Hello
Wev'e got a 2 litre petrol T25 1989 Hit top.
The main battery under the drivers seat has finally died and needs replacing. We just can't seem to get it out of the housing box under the seat. We've got the drivers seat as far forward as it can go and still no joy. The seat is a swivel one and we were reluctant to start taking all the bolts out in case we can't put it all back together again (I'm not very techy). The Haynes manual (not that there seems to be one that specifically covers this make and year) doesn't mention taking the seat out. Are we doing something wrong?
Would appreciate some advice.
Yours hopefully

Ronnie

It's easy to unbolt the swivel, it'll not come out otherwise .... I don't recall Haynes having a swivel in the 1.9/2.1 manual ?

Hi there,

You are gonna need to remove the rotating seat base unfortunately but its dead easy.First turn your seat 90 degrees and slide it forward.I am assuming it's a genuine vw rotating base so at the rear of the runners the last bits are knocked flat (thats all that stops your seat from sliding right off the back) so get a flat screwdriver or pry bar and just gently lift the rearmost tags, this will allow you to slide your seat right off backwards, think it will need to go out of the door direction. With the seat out of the way just undo the 4 13mm nyloc nuts holding the base together, lift the top bit off,(i think you can just prop it up) giving you enough to get your battery out, then just a reverse not overtightening the 13mm nuts so your base still spins freely and knock the tags back down on your runners.Job done :ok
