As Bigherb says, the resistor is in the fan housing. Dash and air distribution unit have to come out to get to it.
Check connection behind switch first though, just to make sure it's not come loose!

Yes I had to take out the dash to fix mine. It is a tedious job but once you get started your van is a scrapper until you get it back together and I found that this spurred me on. It is a bit like when you agree to decorate a room and SWMBO tears off a piece of wallpaper just to focus your mind! You could do a resistance test on the wires going away from the switch to see if it is a continuity problem or a stiff bearing but either way you gotta get the dash off to fix it. I could have loosened up and lubed my bearings but after all that work I replaced the motor for peace of mind.
If the heater is working properly apart from that mark the cable clamp positions as I didn't and have had to faf around getting it right. ie. couldnt get it blowing cool in the summer or couldn't get enough heat in the winter. You can adjust these cables by popping off the heater control facia but access to the cable clamp screw is easier if you take the radio out as well (that is with the dash re-installed).
Cheers and good luck

Many thanks guys for the advice nice one.

i'll check the switch connections first then get to work asap. I can get a new fan from GSF, £53 i think less discount but i wonder if i have to buy the resistor separately or does it come as part of the fan?

When I had that problem I envisaged diving into the motor etc. but a new switch from VW for a couple of pounds saved a lot of time and money. Worked perfectly ever since. 20+ years of twisting takes it out of switch!

HI Chaps i finally got round to checking the switch. I had a loose connection so the fan works on one speed again now. which means the rheostat needs replacing. I might do the fan and heater matrix at the same time.

Can any one tell me does the rheostat come as part of the fan or is it a separate item and if so where can i get one as I've not managed to track one down on the usual web sites. Same for the heater matrix i think. Apart from that it's second hand i suppose??

Cheers for all your help and on a brighter note the camper passed the mot yesterday. Now that did cheer me up.
