3 point seatbelt

Post by TravellingChick »

Hi

When Tinkerbell arrives I need to organise a 3 point seatbelt for the buddy seat when it is rear facing. I definately need a 3 point somewhere in the back and this seems the most appropriate place.

Anyone know of anywhere around West London where I could get this fitted as I don't think I'm up for the job myself tbh :D

TIA
Sarah

Here's a place that is in London but they can get their mobile van to come to you and fit a three point harness. They specialize in Campervans as well.

There is also this place near my house in North London. Highly recommend them and they are very reasonable.

Brilliant, thank you!

2nd link doesn't work but the convenience of someone coming out to fit the belt for me is brilliant so I'll bell them tomorrow.

I think I'm going to put a 3-point seatbelt in for the buddy seat - when I've made it (and yes, looking at your other thread, it will accomodate the porta potti, principally for two under-fives who seem to need such a facility every hour on the hour... but I digress.)

My thinking is that I can use the same mounts as the front seat belt - there are two drilled in the pillar (is that the A pillar?), only one of which is used, I can use the same lower mount, and the same mount for the stalk/buckle. After all in the event of a shunt no stress will be put on the belt itself. What such a belt will do of course is provide a secure fix for the child seat, on top of the buddy seat.

Yup, that's pretty much my intention too. It'll only work when the buddy is rear facing tho.

I s'pose I could convert the buddy to incorporate a loo but not sure I can get my head around going to the loo in the kitchen!!!!

phew! t'aint cheap getting belts fitted eh!

2 x 3 points fitted via the mobile service is about £260 and around £200 if I go to Stanmore.

Trouble is, I can't spare an afternoon to go to Stanmore and he's not open on weekends.

I feel I should morally get 2 belts fitted altho in theory I only need one to secure a child seat.........

Decisions, decisions!

You can fit a 3 point belt yourself, its an extra plate and the holes will already be on the van
you can buy new here (near the bottom of the page)

http://www.syncro-bernd-jaeger.de/ENGLI ... teile.html

I fitted one in the rear of our old bluestar, if you buy and need any help just shout

Alternative solution:-

Open cupboard
Place lots of bubble wrap/old newspapers/your packets of dried food in cupboard
Place small child in cupboard
Close cupboard door
Drive to destination
Open cupboard
Remove child
Assure them it'll be better next time

The bubble wrap has the dual benefit of cushioning your child and reducing the volume of the screams.

Obviously I don't have children and there may be one or two small issues I haven't quite ironed out yet but there you go. :ok

Just thought, it may not be quite as easy to get small child into cupboard on way back. This may require more vigorous "placing" of child in cupboard.

Anyway, this is detail, I deal in concepts.

Is it definatley legal to carry a child in a car seat on a rear facing seat? It was recently suggested to me by someone that this may not be legal? I am struggling to find any info on this. I was hoping I could fit summers seat to our new buddy seat whilst on holiday just to prevent having to keep putting it in and out on account of it being fitted to the rock n roll bed...

great idea, the bubble wrap could also be used to keep the child amused. everyone knows how much they love popping the bubbles right?!

it didn't even occur to me that it would not be legal to fit a forward facing child seat onto a rear facing buddy seat, interesting point. keep me posted on anything you find out.

T will actually travel up front with me pretty much 100% of the time, i just want to be able to take a friend and her child along on occasional trips.

Keet, you're faith and optimism in my ability is flattering but completely unfounded!

I can't even find the bloody engine at the mo, never mind fit car seats myself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:rofl

I guess I don't understand.. You have no seat belts?

Another option is to find some original seatbelts and put them in. :ok Much cheaper then new ones are.

I have seatbelts in the front, not the back tho.

I also have no knowledge, tools or ability to fit me own!

Come back in a year tho and I reckon I'll have learned enough from you guys to have a darn good go.

Okay. Seatbelts are not required in the back. I suggest a 3 point on sliding door side and lap belt in middle. That's all the seatbelts there is if you have a 3/4 back seat/bed. If you have a full width back seat/bed and you have galley behind driver's seat I would not put a seatbelt for that part of back seat as any sudden stop will throw passenger into galley cabinet.

If your van was a window van before conversion to camper, it probably has seatbelt mounting brackets in it, so all you need is a 3 point seatbelt to bolt into the factory mounts.

if your van was a panel van before conversion to camper, it probably has no seatbelt mounting brackets in it, so you need to put a few extra reinforcement pieces in when seatbelts are bolted in... like these: http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php?k ... hop.browse" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You might try posting in "Wanted" for seatbelts you need... and even a member in your area who might install them for a very reasonable price... maybe as cheap as a nice meal and a few drinks.
