Strange for me to post in technical since I don't have a van anymore.
I kindly told the new owner that I would be on the other end of the phone in case he has any hiccups, being a new owner I'm sure he will have quite a few.
He has just rung to ask how to remove the engine, don't snigger. He has the engine on a crane and all the necessary bolts undone - its a diesel. He says he can pull the engine away from the gearbox about 10cm (4 inches) but there is no more room to pull the engine back to remove it. It also says that the gear shaft is still in the engine????
Anything he or I have missed?? Its been a while I know
has he removed the expansion tank/filler tank for the water ,theres loads of room after moving that out.2 screws near the number plate and its away...oh and he has taken the zorst off aint he from the manifold ?

Its the best way to learn, just think once he has done it the first time he will kow for future use. You become more experienced by the mistakes you make than if it all goes well.

Reading this though it sounds like he hasn't dropped the engine low enough to pull out

If its moved 4 inches and the shaft is still in the engine I think perhaps the spigot shaft has become disconnected in the diff housing and has come out with the engine.

that was what I was possibly thinking might have happened.
As for the others, you can take the engine out upwards, I've done it myself before - it might not be the perfect method but it works. I'll pass on the info that he might have the engine hoisted a bit high to let the engine realise properly and the spigot shaft.
and to perhaps lower the engine out, I did tell him to remove the engine and box out together so he could check the gearbox over and change its oil whilst doing all the engine work.

so is the proper way to drop the engine on the floor and jack the van up then?......never even crossed my mind when i did the missus' van...ide got a lovely engine lift to use and ive only got about 6" clearance in the garage before the poptop hits the roof joists...........but i must admit there werent really any probs goin in from the top...i slung the engine close to the hook on the crane and it fitted under the overhead cupboards just fine n dandy.............plus ide got the father-in-law helpin me,been a diesel fitter and hairy arsed wagon driver for 30+ years so we were doin it HIS WAY!!!.......
