1.6 td cylinder head

1.6 td cylinder head
my oil pump gave up the ghost and i drove home, i've investigated and the cylinder head has very thick oil in it, the cam shaft turns but not as easy as it should, can i just clean it up tip some fresh oil in and hope it will work ok?
give me a good old fashioned wedge and i'll be happy!

forgot to mention, the buzzer of doom was going for this entire 5 mile journey, and seemed as if the engine had tightened
give me a good old fashioned wedge and i'll be happy!

Perhaps if you stopped and phoned the recovery service of your choice this 'imposable to acurately answer without inspection' question wouldn't actully need asking? Yes getting recovered is an inconvienance especally if your within a temptingly triable distance of help, but it'll also drasitcly increase the odds of the engine being economicly repairable, along with not risking transmission or other damage if it were to seaze solid while driving (which could cause a crash if it locks solid during cornering, think handbrake turn!). The presurised oil system doesn't just serve the head and camshaft eather, it also does the main bearings, piston cooling (turbo engines) and probubly a few other things depending on engine design - none of which will apreceate not being lubed/cooled properly.
Flashing red lights (red light is legal requirement for oil presure for above safety resions) and buzzers are not just fitted for a laff, its to get you to stop, VW thought it wise to make this mandatory requirement extra conspicouos and redundantly fail safe just to stress the point. Personly if I couldn't get the light to go out without bodging it and didn't have any other methods of testing it (aux instrements for example) to surgest its fine, along with no visual leaks - I wouldn't risk it! Its not a bad idea! Yes I know the buzzer system has a reputation of sometimes false alarming but that tends to be on systems in need of TLC and they can be made to work properly, reliably, without much effort.
Thats all just my opinion though.
