power steering pump

Post by Vanda »

Hi all - firstly, thanks for advice re changing filters etc in Jan - and big thank you to Maxstu for helping me to get it done!

was out yesterday in the van when I noticed a strange smell and then a bit of smoke in the back. AA came (very quickly!) and identified the problem as leaking power steering pump.

the engine is 1.6TD - my question is, about how much might I be looking to pay for a local garage to do it. I don't think it's a big job, AA man said it is all very accessible, but a bit messy - but I'd like to try out the local garage and would like to have an idea of how much it might cost. I know this depends a lot on the hourly rate charged etc, but a ball park figure would be great!

If I get the job done at the garage, will report back because he is a VW specialist but haven't been able to find anyone who has used him.

thanks :ok

seal kit's a tenner, same for a new belt, three hours labour in reality, assuming shaft's not scored. Do the alternator belt too while you're there.

thanks Aidan. doesn't sound as simple as I thought - good to know before I take it in and start thinking the guy's ripping me off.
