Starter Motor Bits fell into the engine

Post by Timmo »

Hi,
Well I decided to buy the a van with a broken engine! (smart or very stupid!)
What happened is that the started motor has disintegrated and apparently bits have fell into the engine.
I'm not sure that this can happen - I thought it would just fall into the bell housing (gear box area).
So maybe will try to clean out and fix rather than replace engine.
What do you think?
Can this happen?
Will the engine be ruined?
Cheers

On a 1.9/2.1 the gear can only disintegrate and fall into the bellhousing, engine (which you're taking out anyway ?) out and the bits will be there. Depends if they've gone behind the flywheel I guess :(

I thought it would just fall into the bell housing (gear box area).

I'd have thought the same. May have damaged the flywheel and/or clutch tho?

If the engine's goosed anyway what's the drama ? Drop it out and all will become clear. BTW you don't say what engine you have :?
