1.9 DG Starter Motor

Post by y30man5 »

The RAC man has told me my starter motor is taking too much current (240A instead of the usual 60-70A).

This may seem like an obvious question to seasoned T25 owners, but is this the right one? http://www.justkampers.com/shop/type_25 ... matic.html

Also, what does it mean by "We recomend changing the starter bush when fitting a new starter part number J11137 "? If your fitting a new starter motor, why do you need to change something on it?

Sorry for sounding stupid, my last car was an XR3i so quite a bit different!

Yes it's the correct one :ok

The T25 starter motor has no nose bracket to support the shaft, instead of which there's an oilite bush which is located in the bellhousing. These become worn, a symptom of which is poor starting when hot, they cost about a £ and can be (relatively) easy to change while the starter's off

Ok, cheers for that.

So I don't need to change the bush on the new one then?

The bush isn't on the starter ... as I said it's separate and mounted in the bellhousing.

I guess he used his amp clamp to check the amp draw....anyway, 240amps is a little high (that's in diesel territory) I would have guestimated 160-200 so I'm not sure where he gets the 60-70amps....maybe he's thinking along the lines of a smallish motorbike starter lol.
What you haven't done here is to tell us why you have had the AA out in the first place, symptoms? etc.
It may not need a starter at all? it could be just the bush..it's hard to say, I just hope once you have paid your dosh it doesn't turn out to be something else ie: earth lead/Battery terminal, solenoid feed wire or ignition switch (which are also all common)

I had similar issues with mine last year, and AA man said similar things from what i remember. Anyway, i only needed a new bush and not another starter motor... (I'd replaced the starter ony a year earlier which is why i just tried a bush, and the fact that i couldn't get hold of a replacement starter and was desperate)

Glad I haven't bought it yet then...

The reason I called the RAC out was...
i went on a drive to Lancaster the other day. Got all the way there no problems, but on the way back it stalled as I slowed to the roundabout coming off the motorway. On this occasion, I got it started again after leaving it a minute or so. Back on the motorway (took a wrong turning, so have to come off again), same problem again, only this time (because nothing other the speedo was working on the dash) I didn't realise it had stalled til I was in the middle of the roundabout! Lots of swearing prevailed and it wouldn't start. I rang the RAC (my membership has been well used). After about 10 minutes, worried about the fact my van was in the middle of the roundabout with many cars coming within inches of hitting it, I tried it again and hallelujah, got it started and drove it off the roundabout and into a layby.

Anyway,to cut a long story short, the RAC man told me that the reason I couldn't get it started again is because of the starter motor. As for the reason it's cutting out, he said it was probably some kind of issue with the carb. He turned the idle speed up a bit and said that that should hopefully get me back home. It was running like a dream then until, for the last 15 miles or so of the motorway, it was a bit 'jumpy' and was lacking power and then it did cut out again as I pulled off at my junction of the motorway. It started again after a couple of minutes and I got it home.

It is quite difficult to start a lot of the time, especially if I've just had a run in it and popped into the shop and try to start it again...

Sounds like you've got a blocked fuel filter to me, Check where the fuel line joins the tank, there is a filter, chances are its all black and crappy, GSF sell them for about £2, swap it and hopefully it should be ok

HI y30,

Welcome to the club and the wonderful world of T25!!

Sorry to hear your van isn't too good on the starting front....in order for the chaps and chapesses what know to give you good and relevant advice, it can be really helpful not only to give the background like you did above, but to describe in detail what exaclyt happens.

for example....non starting could mean anything from just turning and turningm to turning the key and getting nothing at all! (I have had both, and degrees in between). A poorly performing bush will mean it will start with gusto sometimes, and at other times it won't want to know!! Water in the fuel apparently makes it hard to start, gives poor performance and terrible running. As will a dirty carb!

One thing I have learned from here is that the AA is bril for getting you out of a pickle, and sometimes the advice is good.....BUT I always check it out b4 spending any osh with the Gurus on here.

First things first would be to grab a huge cup of your desired beverage, and bung non-starter into the search. Read threads which display similar symptons to yours....for example, a thread recently entitled "My van is afraid of the dark", and "my van doesn't like the rain"!! Its amazing how much you will pick up from just reading!

Good Luck - sure you will soon get it sorted

Em

Thanks for the info about those other threads...

From reading about i'm pretty sure/hoping my problem is just the bush and not the whole starter... I have the new bush now and thought I'd do the fuel filter as well... Gonna do it today I think... Am I right in thinking I need to soak the new bush in oil for 24 hours before fitting though?

Okay... so just been out to have a look at what the starting situation is and it's worse than before now... all it's doing is clicking. Does this mean a flat battery?

Don't know what to do... :?
