Hi,

Would advise you to get a copy of the Volkswagen Vanagon official Factory Workshop manual published by Bentley, which will cost you an arm and leg but is essential especially if you are trying to bring someything back to its original wiring.

You will know that under normal circumstances the relay plugs in to a purpose made socket.

The relay connections should be marked on the base of the relay as follows :-
Identifier
50 - Red/Black -Starter motor solenoid feed - Tees in to the starter solenoid feed coming from ignition switch
87 - Thick Red to Glow Plug Busbar
85 - Brown to -ve earth
L - White/Red - Pre GLOW TIME INDicator Light on panel
30 - Thick Red - +ve in from 50 A fuse in relay box
T - Black/White - To Engine Temp Sender(Pre Glow System)
86 - Black - pair shown on this connection - one to fuse S12 - one to ELECT MAG CUT OFF

I would use the marking on the relay to identify the base connections and take it from there.

Isolate the battery BEFORE probing.

I trust this helps

Regards

Dave
