Holdsworth Variety Fridge relay...

Asked this in Tech.....but no answers





The two green wires bottom right go off to fridge and waterheater/pump.

But only one red fused wire from relay....at the mo its connected to the pump etc....which works with engine not running...

The brown wire shows 12v with engine running, 0v when not....

To operate fridge it seems you have to disconnect pump and reconnect 'other' red wire....
Seems abit fiddly to me + the 15 amp fuse got pretty hot with fridge connected.....and anyway surely the pump shouldn't work without the motor running,cos
isnt that wot the relay does!!!

Any Variety peeps fancy sticking up a photo of theirs???

i know the fridge should only work on 12v with the engine running.and the pump should work with the engine turned off.

That dont look very factory fitted as its 2 different screws holding it on and the wiring looks home done !

So it would seem......the pump deffo works with engine off......I was suprised its wired thru the relay, but works all the while......
Fridge appears to be disconnected.....when I swapped the fridge over to the same connection the fuse got fairly warm.....so thought I'd hang fire! And see if anyone had a similar set up.

At the moment its not wired to run them both, which seems a bit daft........well I guess so as the red from the fridge appears not to be connected!!!

Think I'm on the way to sorting it.........found another red wire off the relay, heading off under the battery, gave it a tug....hey presto, on the end of it was half a melted fuse holder......
According to multimeter...
12V engine running and dash switch on...0V engine off

Pump must use the permanent live off the relay....makes sense now!!!!

Just need to find out why the fuse holder was melted
Any idea what fuse for the fridge....15v????

you need something like a 40 amp fuse holder, not the radio type 5 amp things you can see through.
not sure what size fuse the fridge needs, probs around 15-20 amps i would have thought.
trouble with the low rated holders is they dont make good contact with the fuse, so as high current passes through it causes heat through the poor contact. works like an electric fire.

Nice one,,,,that explains why the holder got hot, when I connected it to the permanent side of the relay.......and
the fact the original was a bit mis-shaped!!
Think I've got a heavy duty blade type holder somewhere

Fridge draws 8 amps when engine running, relay works as a power cut off. Relay is energised from the blue wire from the alternator(either teed off or joined). Your frige relay should have a fuse rating of 25amps and should be located as close to the battery as possible.
