Lost my toy

Post by slobbo »

Well thats my Syncro away. Not happy but needs must. I just need to shift the bay then I'll be after another Syncro. I am seriously considering one of the 16" ex army ambulances Mike (busman) has on his site. Figure the hitop and 2.1 petrol is the way to go for me. The TDi was fantastic but I don't want to go through the pocket emptying experience of the diesel upgrade again and I believe the 2.1 sits quite nicely on the motorway. Being a 16" should dissuade me from a suspension upgrade as well.
Cheers
Rob.

well your gonna be dissapointed, owning a 16" isnt a cheap hobby, nearly everything is 2 or 3 times expensive as 14",the suspension is the same as 14" apart from slightly harder shocks, and waterboxers are like dinosaurs=there gonna be extinct soon, cant believe you sold what you had and now are looking at petrol high tops,if money is a issue stick with 14" cars,cj.
bought some real off roaders!!!!!!!

Had to sell it. Got messed around with a contract I was due to start and since then have had hassles getting another contract. It's more of a cash flow issue. I honestly thought the bay I have for sale would go first and I wouldn't have to sell.

If the 2.1 expires then there is always a Scooby. Not looked at the cost of putting one of them in but it has to be cheaper than a TDi. I needed to put a hitop on the old Syncro if I kept it because 2 kids and 2 adults didn't fit so well with that little pop top.

Cant believe you finally sold it, now instead of wondering if i should take a huge loan to buy it off you, i can now move on to the next stage... and regret not buying it when it was for sale. haha. where is it going?

Hope you get things sorted out soon and are back on the syncro road. We'll get a Scottish Syncro event together this year eh?

Shame to see that the 16" is an unfavourable choice??!! I have a 16" and a 14" and I love my 16". Can I assume from what CJ has said about the Waterboxer, that they are different for the 16" models as I thought they were the same essentially as the normal 2.1??? Am I wrong?? Why are they going to be extinct?? I knew I should have bought a Ford Transit instead?????????????

There is a thing called 16" envy, which comes about by 14" owners spending a fortune to make their VW nearly as good as a 16" is straight from the factory.

The engines in the 16"'s are just the same as all the other models. The 2.1 will not become extinct, it is just hard to find a reputable company when it comes to rebuild time. They take a little more head scratching to work on is all.

CJ drives a T4 which is halfway to being a transhite anyway!!!

Why modify when you can have the best as stock??

The fact that mine is a 16 has not cost me any more so far than if it was a 14.

Great to see a like minded fan!! I have to say though that my 2.1 in the 16" sounds, drives and starts totally differently to the 14"!! Any reason for that. I know the gearing is different but the engine itself seems different. Shame the 16" has been in the workshop being restored with all this snow, but at least I had the 14". But of course no match to the 16"!!!!!!??

Whatever people say about the flat four, it is a great engine, and as you say sounds fab. From the cab I just get a quite burble, like a muted Subaru flat four, though the original of course. On CJ's off road weekend the flat four brigade were just as strong as the diesel converts.

The only reason I thought about a 16" was because I figured I wouldn't need to lift it. Being used to my old Syncronutz beast with the 15" wheels and the 2" lift I wanted something around the same height. A 16" seemed to answer but after investigation the Syncronutz Lift kit fitted isn't that expensive so would consider a nice 14" and put the Syncronutz lift kit on it myself.

Had some fun over the last few days though, and like yo say, doesn't really matter if it is a 14 or a 16, it still a syncro, and that is what counts.

How does the lift kits effect the swerve braking stability of the syncro? I have heard of some horror stories, and remember the guy in his modified landrover who crashed in lincolnshire, several of his children sadly died, the inquest put blame on him for the modifications. At least the 16" is standard and factory tested.
