If you are looking for a £3000 westfalia..... here is one that was on ebay and no-one bid on it....... the seller still has it tucked away in a garage/barn........ it is a watercooled 1.9 petrol.... see advert from ebay here..... tax soon to run out so you could negotiate on price there maybe.....

item number 230317143918

...i still have the van listed on my WATCHED ITEMS on ebay... but you might not be able to get the details up cos the auction ended about 2 weeks ago....... pass me your email and I can pass it on to the seller via ebay if you might be interested.

Good luck, Ian.

You will NOT find an early rustfree LHD sliding door anywhere (early doors are completely different that the post 1984 doors). In Britain, they are rarer then hen's teeth.

Ask me how I know!!

How do you know? :D

I've emailed the seller and told them I've taken advice from some experts and that the best offer I might consider would be under 50% less than their asking price ie: under £2k.

we'll see where that goes!

I'm in the Borehamwood, Herts area too, if you don't mind the company, I could tag along too. Don't know a thing about watercooled engines except their issues, but I'm a big Westy pro (they used to know me on a first name basis at GoWesty.com). PM me if that's OK.

As far as the 1980 Westy, you've done the right thing. The Westy interior in this one is not as favorable as the higher spec and later models. The fake woodgrain look and the full width bed/seat is quite useless as it blocks the side cabinet from being a wardrobe and no one can sit at the inner edge of the rear seat anyway while driving (good for a baby seat I suppose). Plus it does not come with the full width kitchen bay. And to top it off, it's worn. Here's a pic of mine to illustrate the differences: Image

On a positive note, the Aircooled engine has just displayed it's reliability after coming from a cross-continental trip. I'm just weary. Personally, I would never buy another VW camper previously owned by people from OZ/NZ. They usually have shabby interiors and hacked improvisions when things aren't quite right. The idea is that they come to the UK, buy a camper, go across Europa/N. Africa then sell it before they leave, to either make their money back or even profit. Note that there are hard-to-find parts that make owning an early (pre-1984) van not a good idea, especially more so if it's LHD. Plus the later models have improved items like shift linkages, brakes, etc.

You guys ROCK!

Thanks so much. I am impatient and impetuous and hadn't even thought about scarcity of parts pre-1984 etc.

Hoping to hear back from the Blue one and will attempt to set a viewing 14th Feb which suits Keet, happy to have another pair of eyes along too.

Let's face it, I need all the help I can get LOL.

Told you he was a nice guy. :ok

T.C. The Eberspacher heater is an independant heating system for the van. The heater is secured outside on the under neath of the vehicle with the vent coming out under the rear seat by the door. The early petrol ones are very problematic and hard to repair, unless, that is you are an electrical engineer. You can replace the system for £200-£400 with a newer type Eber or fit a Propex and connect it to the underslung gas tank.

Vannagonman. Nice offer mate and also good reply. :ok
