ridiculous heater control question

Post by caveman »

I asked this on The samba without much satisfaction. I didn't get an owners manual[anyone got one to sell ?] with my 1990 transporter, so i'm just trying to figure out my ventilation. No AC and i only have 3 levers for the heat/vent controls. The bottom one is kinda jammed so i'm not moving it until i figure out exactly what it does. Is it for the footwell outlets. I also have the vents at the ceiling in the center section. How do these function. It's somewhat hard to check them while driving alone [i don't have cruise control :D ].Are they affected by the sliding levers in the doors?

I've added vents to the back of my pannel van. No 4th leaver. From what I've been told by passengers they seem to give out fresh air when driving at speed so no fan assistance or heating, just fresh ram-air through the grill? Maybe the 4th leaver just enables you to turn them off if the passengers don't like it? Everything seems to have the same basic heater unit, I think the extra flap just goes on the bottem if required.

My feet control sticks a bit too, maybe cable routeing isn't great, not much space behind there and the radio. Seems to work alright if your ferm with it but it does feal a bit breakable so I tend to leave all to the right as its demist setting, move heat one left a bit if I start melting, as that moves easy.

all vans will have the cut outs in the rear roof side rails

only minibuses/caravelles have plastic vents fitted to them ,when there is also a headlining.
only cold air is vented through them via the 4th lower lever not always fitted.
this system also uses the vents in the door pillar you see when you open the door at just below handle height.
these holes will also have rubbers on the front and a brush type seal on the rear. the air comes from the heater box , through the box section under the dash(knee height) through the door , up the 'b' pillar and along the roof.
designed for fresh air ventilation for passengers.

panel van conversions left the factory with this sometimes especially if they were going to be converted to minibuses in england.
lower slider to the right closes 'down' lower air (hot and cold)
middle is for heat(red = hot)
top is for screen air (right on) hot or cold

the picture on the right of the heater control panel is for positioning the knobs when you want to demist!

dont have the lever, or (more likely) dont have the knob on it?
have a peek in the slot, the lever, if it hasnt got a knob on it will be hiding just up from the slot, out of sight.

if the bottom lever is jammed, there is either something in the large flap(take center cover off and insert finger in air duct you can feel the flap, is it stuck? ) or the cable is buggered, it goes to a smal lever on the side of the heaterbox which point upwards ish.

I have the vents and a headliner. I think billy729 is right as i have one of those ex german army versions, which some were made into mini buses [not mine]. My blower fan is getting very noisy so i will be removing the dash and then i can see exactly what is going where. In looking at Vagcat and some other photos, it looks like there are 2 different types of heater boxes, especially it seems some have an extra section at the bottom, maybe for AC and or ones with the extra ventilation.

Yes the vents in the dash ends work with the heat control.

Are we talking about the same van? My top lever is for the windscreen. My middle lever is for the feet vents. and the bottom lever is attached to the hot water water valve. I haven't worked out how the door vents work.

Top is defrost .middle is amount of heat, lower is for floor vents. If there is a forth, its for the rear.
