i am looking for the engine code on the engine i have just removed, the only code i can find is vw 5001 stamped on the bottom of the oil breather what is this?
weird cheers for looking mate. i wonder why it doesn't have a number stamped on the block?at least i know it drives well, sweet as a nut.i'm going to scrub all over the engine now to find a bloody number
right i have looked everywhere on it,there definately is no other numbers anywhere!i was just thinking the same guys.possible rebuilt engine?i've just taken a number off the heads,it is 025101375c,this is the same as a 2.1 head taken off my dads van.both heads look pretty newish, rocker covers have stickers on them, and the engine is really quiet and pulls like a train.cheers guys

vw exchange rebuilt engine made week 50 2001,
if you check the heads you'll find stamped the initials of the guy who built it and a date and on the case halves at the front of the engine the a number will be stamped on each to signify they are a matched case pair.
There is no way to tell wether it's a dg a dj or an mv, except by the paper sticker on the top of the engine on the right case half which has probably gone or become illegible.
Iy may be possible to work out the throw of the crank by a rod on the cylinder through the spark plug hole and measure it.
