Another non-starter prob 1.9DG petrol 1984

Post by sezicoolcat »

Hi team club80-90!!

Always had trouble starting Edla. She has sat for a while.
Charged battery up during the week. Now have good battery :) 12v across the + and - terminals.
However, she won't start at all.
I have checked the wiki and previous postings. People mentioned do you hear a click etc when turning key.
I'm in the front - engines in the back - is the click in the cab, or the engine bay? (Yes, I'm really that thick when it comes cars/vans - but I want to know more...)
It does turn the crank over because the belt on the alternator spins.
I can't check for a spark as I don't have the grip/strength to get the leads off! (Do I squeeze the top of the leads or lower down nearer the plug?)
Considering it turns the crank, does this mean the starter is OK, or shot?
I was thinking along the lines of fuel - although guage said I had 1/4 tank, previous posts suggests not to rely on the guage being ok, so I got a can of fuel and put that in. Still no joy.
If its the fuel pump - how would I know if it faulty? I know the test is to unplug fuel hose and check if it pumps fuel out (I guess) but not knowing where the fuel line is...

I'm stuffed aren't I? Like all meets, I'm supposed to be camping weekend of 28th March and I can't see I will be.

Also, I know I have to do a compression test and post results up here - but can one perform this test if the van is a non-starter? Or is this an ideal time to get this test done?

I do hope someone can help me - I am feeling so low knowing she won't start. I just don't have the expertise/skills - although I'd like to think I do (I mean, I've changed a starter motor on my old Mondy a few years ago - started first time - best feeling in the world!)

Sarah x

Mark,

I don't think sarah would want your van, she would have hell with the electrics!!!!!!!!

Sarah,

Don't panic.....Course you will be camping.....its only not starting - tisn't as if its drippng vital fluids out of the engine. You should of given me a shout or a knock or sommat....would have come over and sucked teeth. Could have changed petrol pump with a known good one from my van anyway, eh Mark???!!! Then coil, dizzy cap etc etc.

You gotta use the old girl you know.....they don't like just sitting around

Take care

Em

oh...when did it last have a full service of the ignition equipment? If you don't know, now would be a good time to replace
HT leads
Spark plugs
Dizzy cap
Rotor arm

Then you know its all new. If you can, get them in for the weekend then you can change them with mark showing you (and me!!) how....

Take care

Ok Emma. I will try and get the things in - I do know that when I had all that MOT trouble in Sept, my mechanic did do an oil filter and oil change (not entirely sure why though as i asked him to fit new rocker cover gaskets that I supplied him, which he told me he didn't replace when handing me back the vehicle...)

I guess its best to call GSF and quote the VIN / engine number when ordering parts - as their online ordering system suggests some items I need have 2 or 3 diffferent types - take ignition lead sets eg:

92604D IGNITION LEAD SET T25 1.9 / 2.1 >7/84 (Non-Pin Type)
92621D IGNITION LEAD SET T25 1.9 / 2.1 Water Cooled 7/84 > 11/90
92621E IGNITION LEAD SET T25 1.9/2.1 PIN TYPE 83>

I wouldn't know which was right for my van. I know its an A reg and the V5 says 7/84 - but that was when first registered, so I could need any of these listed...

I'll try and get some parts in for the weekend.

I'll PM you Mark to arrange times etc...

Yep. Vans starting a treat now. lazy/blocked fuel pump - Mark gave it some CPR - needs replacing - that will be next job.
Starter bush replaced. rotor arm and dissy cap replaced.

Many, many thanks to Mark,Ruth, Emma and John for all their help and the in-snow entertainment. Get you a drink or two at the next Fox & Goose meet.

Shall take Edla out more often for a run up and down the M2 from now on, like emma suggested. Rachaels not complaining one little bit
