Jon sounds a bit unlikely that these things are connected but even so here's my advice on what to do next..... No idle may simply be a bit of shyte floating about in the carburettor which will need cleaning out by someone who knows what they are doing, I would go as far as to say replace the fuel filter at the fuel tank then work your way back to the carb to complete the cleaning process.
Personally I would be doing this before anything else, for peace of mind really....

Your fuse blowing sessions will have to go through a similar process of elimination,,,,,IF the fuse blows as it is replaced then you have a dead short somewhere ( a live wire chaffed or rubber through going to ground) But if it only happens once something is switched on (ie heater motor or wipers) then the motor/s may be siezed giving similar symptoms as a grounded live wire.

Good luck,

Regards

PS, This is provided the vehicle was running fine prior to the faults appearing, IF the vehicle has been worked on and these faults have developed since, then my guess is as good as any ones. :D

sticky/faulty blower can cause the wiper/blower fuse to go. I must remember to seperate these as I had that fuse blow myself once on a motorway in torrential rain. Had to drive two miles almost blind until I could find an exit and replace the fuse. Was cured afrer I stripped dash and squirted WD40 in blower motor. May not be the cause in your case but agree on chafing wires - anything like that in the circuit will blow that fuse.

Thanks for your answers......Running fine until now...
Turns out the fuse was the wrong size
Changed it now......hopefully that'll sort it..
Altho it had been fine since April, when we bought the van.....
Its just they both reared their heads at the same time.......

As for the lack of tickover......
Shall be renewing the filter, and going from there :?

check the vac advance pipes onto the dissy and the carb..... also check the brake servo vac hose off the of the inlet manifold for leakage

Was fine....well did tend to be a bit low, but never stalled.

Now it starts fine, idles for about 5 seconds, sometimes less, then dies.

Cut off valve.....is that like on a Bay?..... Still learning about T25s

Had a quick look for one, but couldnt see one....its a Pierburg, so not sure if they have them...
OR... is it a different type of cut off valve... :?

Replacing the fuse with a higher rated one may just be masking the prob. If it wasn't blowing before, suspect there is still a problem there. Again these were all symptoms of a slowly seizing blower motor on mine.

ner-ner ner-ner-ner :D

Sixth sense thats what would happen. I can't for the life of me see why VW chose to put wipers on same circuit though. Imagine fuse going on wipers in bucket torrent rain on the M1. Thats what happened to me. I put blower on then POP - no wipers. I honestly think that blower should be on its own circuit.

Where you go from here depends on your time but essentially that dash probably needs to come out. Its honestly not as bad as it sounds if you have a tea boy (or girl - CURSE politically correct). It can take a leisurely few hours (an hour once you've done it before) to get it out and get some WD40 in to the motor. Rarely does motor pack up but they can seize as here. Short-term remove blower switch knob to reduce chance of you switching it on again. Use the time to replace wiper jet pipe (soft silicon pipe from aquatic shops is cheap) and anything else you can do while you're in there.

Blower motor (despite smell) may still be fine once you work the WD40 in and turn it by hand a few times. You can access it without splitting blower box but you do have to remove it and thats a dash out job for sure so do any other jobs under there that need attention. If yours is like everyone elses, the edge next to windscreen will be partly rusty or corroded so you can repaint that at same time. Haynes says remove steering column but you just need to undo top fixings and lay it down with drivers seat removed. Shear bolts can be undone with molegrips and put back by same method

As said, idling is probably unrelated.

:D Idle sorted....... :D :ok

Not sure how tho!!!

Battery flattened so gave it a good trickle charge. Started her up and she stalled.....started her again, hey presto!!!

Hoping it was some crap in the fuel.....

Might leave the 'blower' a while.....i.e Quit while ahead......

Cheers Jon......
