Battery Difficulties

Post by Flibbertigibbet »

My main battery is totally flat and so I bought a jump start pack yesterday as I can not call A.A. out again.Just tried to put it on and got massive sparks (not just a little) followed by a funny smell.

Is it possible I put wrong leads on wrong connecting bits? would this cause all these sparks ?

There is no way of telling which is + or - on battery well not that I can see anyway I have no idea how to remove the battery or put it back on for that matter

The terminals should be at the rear of the bus and positive should be to the left and neg to the right. Red wire + black wire -

Sorry to be so thick so if battery is behind drivers seat the positive (red) should be nearest passenger side and negative next to drivers side door ? Also if I have blown fuses where the devil will they be ?

just below each terminal on the battery there will be a + and a - raised or stamped into the battery.or just check the colours of the van leads that are on it now.negative will be closest to drivers door.

Julie,

the postive will have a red wire coming off it, the negative will have a big earth cable (mine is like a plaited metal cable, about inch wide, but some are really think cable) that is fixed to the metal bodywork near the battery.

To get it off you will need a spanner (mine are 10mm bolts) undo the bolt that makes the clamp tight, and wiggel/tap/hit/clout the clamp till it comes off. Do same for other side. Tuck the clamps and cable out the way once off. You will need to move the seat quite a way forward to get the battery out, though.

Good luck. Done me own several times!

not greasing the terminals is what caused it, then add some damp or water and you get acid corrosion, that stuff is horrid to breath in.
needs to be cleaned off with a brillo pad
