battery light dim on idle

Post by ermie571 »

Hello,

as it says, my battery light is glowing dim when at idle :( and low revs. Blip the throttle and out it goes.

Read the wiki - is this likely to be the brushes on the back? :?:

it will be either muck or brush pack, whip the brushpack out and give it a clean with brake or carb cleaner, and check the brushes.......

could also be the belt slipping, but i doubt it

mocki,

thanks for the quick reply!

Whip the brush pack out....will this be blindingly obvious when I look at my alternator?? What tools do I need to remove it? The brushes have to be more than 7mm, right?

Do I need to disconnect battery etc etc?

Can I buy replacement brush pack, or is it new alternator time?

new belt, and no whiny slippy noises, so don't suspect that.

Learning sommat new every day....

Yes, you can buy a new brush/regulator pack.

I've never disconected the battery but that doesent mean you should.

Two screws hold the brush pack on.

Brush length = 13mm new 5mm buggered.

I would definitly disconnect the battery.

The big terminal on the back of the alternator carries the full power of the battery, and a short from there to earth, via a spanner etc, is not to be taken lightly !!
