Whiff of petrol...

Getting a slight whiff of petrol, only when you stop as you walk passed the air vents on the rear of our T3 1.9 water cooled.

Have checked all the fuel lines and, no leaks, tubes all seem in great condition...does smell all the time, just literally the minute you stop, turn of the engine, no smell in the cab inside either.

Any ideas ?

Check n check n check again all the fuel line hoses, even better just replace em for peace of mind and then start looking where else the smells coming from. It may jus be the carb needs tuning/rebuilding or a very slight leak from a hose just eliminate the most hazardous first!
BUT being someone currently restoring 2 vans which have had small fires from hoses n backfires round the carb at the moment for the sake of an afternoon fiddling with a fivers worth of pipes change em...

i had the same,the fuel line hoses look good, but got a smell of fuel still, and yes it was the fuel line one had a hole in it and fuel come out when running, i was luck that iv still got a van,i was just driving along and still geting this smell of fuel so i pull over and open the back then run wow it was every were,i was so lucky no fire this could happen to anyone so do what iv done a peet be safe, iv up date all my fuel line too the armer one now and i feel happy iv done this

Is the fuel pump OK?
Or it could be a blocked jet in the carb forcing fuel back into itself somewhere/somehow. Get a carb gasket/rebuild kit from GSF or even better Vw for bout £20 n strip n rebuild it, blow allthe jets out, check that the auto chokes all sweet n the water pipe there is unblocked - I had real roughin engine turned out to be corroded and blocked and so the choke was fully on all the time!

And while ya there spend that fiver n change the hoses too for peace of mind and the oooh I won't have to do that for a while factor!

I Had exactly the same thing, Mine turned out to be the return pipe which was a braided hose, And only leaked when i switched the engine off.
