Gonna start rustoleuming soon, would this rough up the paint aswell as removing alot of it or is the only way hand sanding? Thanks!

I think they would remove to much you only need to key the surface using a scotch pad, will take a bit longer but be a better finish!!!!!!

These are fantastic pieces of kit and I have used them in the past, but as James says they are a bit too aggresive for what you want, you will end up changing a smallish job into a biggish job. (They never last long for me either).
Post a piccie of what you are dealing with and I am sure a suggestion of the best way of dealing with it will be reached. (If the piccie does not show the real scale of the problem, hold a ruler up against it for scaling purposes.

Hello, Mr Spanner, thanks for your reply, it is not a small area i am hoping to remove paint from it is the bottom half of my van, just above the handle down to the bottom, i would like to greatly thin the paint so i could see what was happening behind it, and if there where any trouble spots sort them out before i put rustoleum on. Thanks for your reply!

No probs, you will have arms like popeye when you have finished.
For local areas of lots of rust a good tool is a simple cup brush on a drill, a little more agressive, a twist cup on a grinder, mega aggressive a flap wheel on a grinder (either sand paper or carbon), Remember your more likely to put holes in bodywork the more aggresive you go.
Start softly and see how you progress. Have fun.

I think i have accepted that a couple of days hard sanding is the only way to go, any sort of rotational sanding is going to scuff and burn the paint and not be smooth enough over all. Vibration sanding wont mould to the side of the van like a hand and sandpaper will so i think 24 cans and 3 people is the way to go for the sanding process, i really want to get the sand down and seam fix the best i can, spoke to a mechanic the other day who say the best thing to do on the seams is to put sand paper in a V shape sand in the groove but not too much because they have rubber in, then rust remove gel, vactan and run some sikaflex down the seam, finish of with a wet finger!
With respect to the sanding, if it was to start raining overnight while the van was in the roughed up keying stage would there be any major problems with that or would it be a case of letting the van dry out and carrying on? Obviously if it got rained on a few times itd start creeping in places n hiding but what about just once?
