Klaxon Air Horn

I've been toying with the idea of fitting a Klaxon but does anyone know if they are road legal. I know they are on older vehicles that had them fitted originally but is the law different if you are changing to one?

my only horn (ooh err missus) is a aaarrroogggaaahh one.and its gone through 3 mot's with no problem.as long as its no more than a 2 tone its ok

has to be single tone, but our fitters have fitted one in place of the standard horn. Broke within a week full of water.

I fitted a diesel train air horn to my CF camper complete with air tank, compressor and operating cord running over side window. I was so loud it sometimes frightenned even me! It caused so much confusion and chaos on the road that I took it off. It sure sorted out the middle lane huggers though.

I have a standard cheecky little horn for everyday use the a two way way diverts power to a massive truck horn with compressor which makes people think about what they are doing. Have it on cheeky for MOT and truck horn when in a temper. Its about 24inch long and shiney, my horn that is

My garage worshop is full of all sorts of stuff so I am able to coble together almost anything using parts I have to hand. In this case I used:
A 12V mini compressor B&Q or Halfords etc.
An air tank made from a small gas bottle - although a two litre pop bottle will hold a fair pressure.
A scrounged 12V solenoid valve - or did I rewind a washing machine solenoid vaalve for 12V
But the most important thing is a pressure switch which I probably bought from RS components.
Mine used to charge up the tank when I switched on and just top up ocasionally or after blowing someone out of the way!
Two things though:
Compressed air tanks are dangerous - even pop bottles - best stow it under the van or out of the way.
Best have it isolated from the battery when the ignition is off in case of the pressure switch failing while unattended.
You need an instant blast of air to start those train horns and I never had any success with direct drive pumps.

I'm not sure I'd want to go down the volume route but theres a lot of merit in having the happy 'meep meep' of a standard horn and an optional 'I'm flippin annoyed horn' for more poignant occasions. That was pretty much what I had on my old beetle and it worked well.
