Tappet gaps 1.9DG
I need to adjust my tappets as they are deafening me. Does anyone know the correct gap size for a 1.9DG (early)? I have searched the wiki and performed a search of the forums but can't find anything. I know a type 4 is 0.006: right ball park?

hydraulic tappets so preload at 1 1/4 to 1/ 1/2 turns in seems to be about right on a run in engine,
is oil good and correct grade ?

Have you just run it a short time/distance?? (ie moved it on the drive and run it for 5 mins...)
What oil have you got in it?
Might be worth checking the rockers havent come loose/studs snapped...
Use a 15w40 oil (or if very tired a 20w50) and take it for a 30 minute run...
If its still noisey, then you may well have to reset the tappets.. I would use 1/4 -1/2 turn preload from just touching and see how it goes...

nope not even close
for a solid lifter is 0.06 thou
for a hydraulic lifter is 1 1/2 to 2 turns in from zero lash,,, I tried the 1/2 turn and it didn't work for me.
Not wanting to start a debate but most articals I have read have suggested that preload should be 2 turns

Re: Tappet gaps 1.9DG
Thanks for the replies. I always use halfords 20W/50, which I change every 2.5k miles or so using a bottle of wynns engine flush, and the seals all look tight but I'll be sure to change them when I do the tappets. Granted, after the engine is nice and warm the whole lump is much quieter, and I have the carb set to tick beautifully, but whilst I'm avoiding the salty roads I am doing all the precautionary tweaks and turns to get at least another year out of it!
