Dizzy is 180 degrees out?
Can I tell just from its position? And if it is how does one fix this.
Do i have to losen the dizzy and physically turn it? or can I just take rotor arm of and put it back 180 degrees different?
My van is still a pig to start, 30 mins this morning and when it does start it pops and doesnt idle very well
Cheers

The rotor arm has a locating noggin so you can't put it in wrongly.
With respect you're displaying sufficient lack of knowledge to force me to suggest you take this to a known good mechanic.

Ian.
I totally agree about the lack of knowledge but you have to learn at some stage! and according to many posts on this forum - after a rebuild it is common for the dizzy to be put back 180 degrees out. So in that context I would have thought that #1 lead will reach in a lot of curcumstances

Cheers for your advice

I believe Ermie Emma had this trouble and her leads wouldn't fit.

Re: How do I know if my......
its not unknown for the engine to be rebuilt and the doggdrive for the dissy to be 180 deg out, but all this means is you have to move the leads round 180 deg
it will make no difference to the running, or the timing, as long as you know its like this.
its dead easy to find out.
drop the rocker cover off the rhs of the engine, so you can see the rockers, and turn the engine by hand so No.1 has both valves closed at tdc, then look at your dissy and the rotor should be pointing to the "notch" in the casing, and the plug lead that goes to No.1
the timing mark should also line up at the same time.
i very much doubt your problem is 180 outness, although it could well be firing orderness, my money is on vac or induction leaks at the carbs

Re: How do I know if my......
I knew that my dizzy was 180 degrees out becuase of the leads....and having another engine to compare them to!
ok 4 leads plus the coil leads.
firing order 1 4 3 2
Kev has done this drawing:

that is what it should look like. Mine does now
Basically, the two leads on the right hand side as you are looking at the engine should cross over each other, the other 2 go directly to the sparkplug nearest them. It is the crossing of the leads that allows the 1 4 3 2 order rather than 1 2 3 4 - ie 2 and 4 are reversed in the sequence.
Also, have a look at the engine picture in the wiki
Keep asking questions.
