Achieving full throttle

I noticed while looking at my engine with a friend in the driving seat that with your foot right down on the accelerator pedal, the carb linkage doesn't pull all the way to full throttle - more like 75%. The pedal itself is rivited to the floor at the back and has a foot on the front that stops it when you push it right down, if i was to cut the foot off i'd get full throttle - i'm just wandering if i need to.

I realise on my twin 40'd mk2 golf this would be a massive hinderance - but i'm not yet familiar with the Aircooled engine workings... (hopefully this could be why it is so slow!?)

where are you looking for full throttle??

on the throttle levers or on the butterflys of the carbs??

if its on the butterflys then the thing is you could have a worn (stretched )throttle cable or someone may have fiddled with the length of the throttle rods off the linkage to the carbs.

Is the throttle cable slack when the pedal isn't depressed or got a bit of dead peadal travel? Maybe the ajuster on the bottem of the pedal (under the floor of the van) has slipped/needs setting? I'm not big on carbs but seems silly if the buterfly isn't able to open fully. Set it so when the pedal hits the floor the throttle is fully open (so the pedal travel is limited by the stopper not the cable) If the van is stock I wouldn't modify the pedal, there will be a proper ajuster for it without bodgeing which could have undesirable consiquences.

Thanks for that, i'll get underneath in the next couple of days and see if there is an adjuster. I don't think the cable would have stretched - but it has those symtoms. I'm unsure as to whether its an original pedal, which could have made the problem when replaced.

Throttles should not open fully. there should be between 1mm - 1.5mm clerance between the throttle and throttle stop at full throttle.
