Well it does about every three days after using a whole battery each day. So I am extremly lucky if i can get it going.
Its a 2ltr Aircooled CU engine 1983.
I have just had a reconditioned dizzy fitted but it was all done by hand as my mate never had a timing gun. So I know the timing will need to be done (when i get it running).
And the non-starting problems started with this cold snap. Before that it started quite easily with its recon dizzy.
When i do get it running I only need to run it for 30 seconds. Then i can turn it off and it will start imediatly. For as long as its warm no problems.
One thing I have noticed when looking at the pic in the wiki of the same engine :
https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Pe ... gnition_01
Is that my pipes are connected in a completly different way. Mine bus has a dual vacume dizzy the same as the image in the wiki
Here is the image in the wiki
And here is mine
The wiki says that "The pipe to the cone side of the diz vac unit should come from the left carb and the pipe to the other side of the vac unit, next to the diz body, comes from the balance pipe at the back of the airbox."
With mine the pipe from the cone side of the dizzy vac comes from one of the two pipes that come from the air filter box. And the pipe from the left-hand carb goes to body side of the dizzy vac. The pipe that comes from the balance pipe at the back of the airbox just goes to the black round thing on the lefthand side next to the breather pipe (if you know what i mean)
Any ideas? is mine wrong. If someone with an 1983 2ltr Aircooled with a dual vac dizzy could just pop there head in the back to confirm the correct configuration I would be very grateful
Cheers

Re: My Van still wont start!
Well for starters, get your air filter box off and make sure the chokes are working properly. Unless they are, starting will be next to impossible really in these temperatures. Aircooled engines should start on the smell of an oily rag but if you get a combination of poor compression, timing way off and no choke, you'll be turning the ignition all day. VWs hate air leaks too - anywhere. I've mentioned this before, but a dash of fuel directly into each carb mouth will start most stubborn engines unless theres no spark at all.

Re: My Van still wont start!
Hi and thanks
Well when i remove the air filter the butterfies are both closed so one would imagine that they are working!
At the moment I really cant understand why vacume pipes on the image in the wiki are complely different than mine. Surley there is a correct configuration for these. Mine are completly round the wrong way.
Cheers

Re: My Van still wont start!
Would swapping the pies to follow the set up shown in the wiki piccy be worth a try? I honestly don't know the answer (ours is WBX) but could your pipe set up be bypassing the vaccuum? Is that how the pipework was on the old dizzy (without a vaccuum??) and just need re routing to use the vaccuum?
If unsure about stuff I generally try and make it LOOK like everyone else says it should look, but better just check that re-routing the pipes won't cause any damage
Good luck
Andi

Re: My Van still wont start!
the pipes are all to bollo.cks but that wont give you the start problems.
when you get in press the throttle to engage the chokes and turn it with no throttle. it should start.
