Clocked my 2.1 pop top camper at 26 mpg on 2 decent trips of motorway and country roads (but completely avoiding traffic or stop/start stuff) and low revs cruising around 65 mph, so can live with that. Must be down to 20-22 when used as daily driver and hit regular traffic or use for some distance at 70-75 to clear cobwebs!

My diesel pick up (1.9td) is much better on juice although I generally drive it a bit slower at about 55-60mph as all local daily-driving. Plus has rev gauge and tend to watch that rather than speedo. That much better than camper that I've not yet bothered to clock it!

I use a little application on my iphone called Accufuel. Works well. You just put in the numbers when you fill up and it does the rest.

rob is 26mpg realistic for a tdi convertion and what speed and rpm does it do.i`d have hoped for better fuel mpg with a tdi and it makes me think about converting my 2.1 to diesel.

Lee if your getting 23mpg with your 2.1 its costing you 17.17p per mile to run. If Slobbo is getting 26mpg with his tdi its costing him 17.01p per mile to run.

I worked it out with petrol at 86.1ppl and derv at 98.2ppl. if you going to do it just for fuel savings don't bother because they cost the same to run on the figures you've given me. Or you might want to go for an lpg conversion but this wont pay for itself until after 17000 miles at todays fuel costs.

That is really 26mpg around town. When I go on a long run the MPG climbs to about 29mpg. On the motorway it was around 27mpg travelling at 70 or a bit more. The gearbox is an AAN

Standard Gearbox

The gears Aidan put in are
3rd - 1.18
4th - 0.77

70mph is somewhere between 3000 to 3300rpm.

Is a Syncro really that bad on diesel compared with a 2wd?

My 2wd was doing 45mpg on the run to Holland & back. It was a steady speed & quite flat, but it was good to Vanfest & back. I filled up before I left, didn't refuel again.

I do drive quite steady & keep the speed down to 60mph.

Are you sure, my 1000cc Nisan Micra does average 45-50 mpg. There is physically no way that you can coax 45mpg out of one of these buses. Except on the back of an AA recovery truck.

My dad's 2.5 tdi 102bhp syncro T4 has over 100,000 achieved 28mpg. And he does not go above 3000rpm. I have goy it sub 20mpg when towing a 1500kg caravan 250miles at legal speeds. My old V8 rangerover did a best of 17mpg towing, and worst 14mpg at French limits (around 80mph) And that engine was sure better to tow with in everyway than the T4 diesel.

His seat 1.4 tdi 3 cyl "mother of all fuel efficient engines" PD Arosa 2004 has an average over 35,000 of 47mpg, virtually all short town trips though.

I have reassessed my mpg results and they come back a little worse than I expected. I dont generally do MPG figures other than in my head when I fill up, and she will do 25 mpg on a run under normal circumstances.

Here is my data from the Corsica trip, I will admit that it is not quite as good as when I first calculated the overall consumption, but hey I am honest.

this is with a fully loaded hightop syncro near max weight

264 miles Vironay 12.0 gallons 22mpg 120 kmh
315 miles Bourges 14.6 gallons 21.6 mpg at 120kmh (combined two smaller fills)
192 miles Clermont Ferrand 7.2 gals 26.6 mpg. at reduced speed of 100kmh.
302 miles Millau 10.6 gals 28.5 mpg 100kmh. and fine weather, following lorries.
251 miles Basti Corsica 12.1 gals 20.7 mpg flat out
250 miles Porto Vechio 9.7 gals 25.8 mpg flat part of island pootling
100 miles Ile st Rousse 5.2 gals 19.2 mpg on 95 ron and lots of mountain passes
187.5 miles Frejus France 8.8 gals 21.3 mpg. Flat out 120-130kmh strong head wind.
294 miles Vallon Pont D'Arc 12.8 gals 23 mpg Flat out as above.
315 miles Auxerre 12.7gals 24.8 mpg 120-130 kmh head wind.
232 miles Dieppe 9.8 gals 23.4 mpg A mix of peripherique, peage and N Roads. no wind.

2702 miles using 115.53 gals = 23.38 mpg.

Couldn't agree more, used to do mpg graphs on whole fleets of cars, and buses and trucks, and never ceased to amaze me the difference between 'thought' and 'reality' :)

We have a Micra too, and reckon 45 would take some very 'careful' driving...

We have done three long one day trips in the Micra at sat nav 70mph which is about 75 on the clock.These trips all came back at 50mpg.
1. Devon to Bolton and back 400 miles
2. Devon to Cromer to Devon in a day 600 miles
3. as above 600 miles.

200 miles to a tank 18 to 20 litres. 15 quid or 7.5p per mile.

Everyone should have a Micra.

Yes, ours is about 1990, a Mk 1, that square shape, so draggy at speed! Think we can get 40 mpg but doesn't liike motorway hills. Very good away from the lights :)

I should have made proper notes when I did the trip to Budel in Holland.

I filled the van when I left Aldershot, drove to Ramsgate. I sailed to Ostend & then drove to Budel. On the way beck in Belgium I filled up again as I was getting low. I drove back to Ostend, then sailed to Ramsgate. I drove home to Aldershot, then to The Festival of speed in Chichester & home, then drove to Bournemouth. I put more fuel in on the way back from there.

How big is a tank on a 2wd diesel?
