Suspected water in fuel system

Post by BundeswehrBrick »

I suspect i have some moisture in the fuel system on my 1.9td aaz, I think i may be able to drain it out of the filter but is there any other place to drain water from e.g. the fuel pump ?
thanks.

I would look for the cause. Tank rotten? filler pipes come apart? Replace the filter, mine collapsed and it was caused by a rusty tank.

once water is in pump it is unlikely to find its own way out, will require some stripping.

A bit off topic but:
We have been having starting problems with my mates five cylinder petrol Volvo. A while ago we called out the AA homestart and hid behind a fence while the chap spun it over for about three minutes until it suddenly burst into life. It ran well for a couple of months and then died again. Again having been flumoxed by this my mate got it to a Volvo garage who in a last desparate attempt found the petrol contaminated with diesel fuel. How this happened is betond my mate as he is the only one driving it. I don't know what the percentage is but he said it doesn'r take much. Water of course can be seen as quite seperate drops or globules even at the plug!

Diesel does often contain a bit of water, not masses but a bit none the less. The filter is ment to trap it and thats why VW say you should drain the tap on the filter at service when the filter isn't due changing. If somethings actully letting in water though it won't cope. Some of the latest cars have sensors on the filter to detect and warn of full water traps as they are even less tolorant of water than the older ones.

We have a product for sale here called "Lassol" which is basically alcohol and mixes with the water and fuel so that the water is burnt off with the fuel rather than being unable to mix. I don't know if there is a UK version, maybe a bottle of cheap vodka would do the trick
