Too much fresh air...
Hello folks.
I have a 2l Aircooled devon conversion with a CJ engine fitted. As a result I don't have the greatest supply of hot air, but I do get some (no blower). The main problem is air blowing in from outside from various places behind the dashboard. The fresh air vent sliding control works i.e allows and restricts, as does the positioner from window to feet.
The culprits are behind the steering column and from the air vents left and right. I have read the trick in this forum about gaffa taping up the vent after taking the grill off, however, I'm not convinced this is the issue due to it stopping air getting to the window/ feet. Are there other places the wind can get in? Will expanding foam and/or polystyrene blocks help?

I might try driving mine backwards to see if that helps
Seriously though The only other place where cold air can come in would be the tiny hole in the floor where the accelerator cable/pedal is - not enough to create the coldness your talking about.
Have you checked all the pipe work behind the dash? I discovered the fresh air vent to the right of the steering wheel had the pipe off and was pointing to my feet thus blowing, no blasting cold air at my feet!
You can easily feel and see all the pipework and if needed the glovebox comes off very easily for access

Just one other thought,... the bottom slider on the heater controls.. where is it set to? in this weather it needs to be all the way over to the right - might be worth a quick lift out the of ashtray in the centre of the dash and check that when you move it the lever that it operates the cable attached to it

On a slightly different note, does anyone have an idea how to attach an inline fan to draw more warm air from the engine, or failing that, a blower attached to the engine/ tinware?

if all the pipework and pods etc are all there and working you wont need anything else. my Aircooled wedge was the warmest thing i have ever driven. plain awesome.
dont waste money buying bits you dont need , just spend a few hours ensuring all pipes are present and pods are actually open and off you go!!

Take the front outside grill off and check any pipes/cables are sealed off properly. My old camper would freeze your knee caps solid and it was all for the want of a couple of rubber grommets. Air is a bit like water - a pin-prick can lead to problems far in excess of appearences. These vans are draughty by default anyway.....

I've got a strange engine set up, with the only blower currently operating being the engine fan. This used to recirculate in the engine bay, cooking the lovely rebuilt engine. As it's off a bay, the tinwork is not the same, but manages to join up to the "Y" connector after a fashion. I'm thinking of a replacement engine, but as there's not a great deal wrong with this one, bar the heat, I'm reluctant.
Hopefully I'll get to some meets/ shows in the winter with wifey if I can keep her warm.
Again, a big "ta" to you all and will let you know how I get on.

Right. I think I deserve some sort of award for the most clumsy get on this forum.
This is what I did...
Removed grill and applied liberal dose of gaffa tape to fresh air vent. Checked heater pipework from front to back and located small problem of pipework hanging off near rear heat exchanger. Of course this was right behind/ inside rear drivers wheel. Spent ~15 mins trying to reattach pipe. Got rust/ carp in eye. Removed rust and tried again. Removed rubber boot, turned it round and attached pipework. Started van to check hot air flowing, great - all well. Decided to move van slightly closer to house and ran over grill, smashing to small pieces.
Again, thanks for the help, van is much less draughty and was even tepid when I took it out. Will be purchasing blower as reccomended to help.
