clutch cable - 1981 1600 air cooled
Hi - driving down the road and heard a lound twang/thump sound and then my clutch pedal went all lose and no gear change. I guessed the clutch cable must have snapped. Coasted to a stop and got my mate to tow me home.
I tried ringing a couple of places to get a replacement cable, but was told most t25's dont have cables. I am sure it sounded so much like a cable snapping that it must have been one. Is there a quick way to check? How easy is it to swap over the cable? Any tips/ time savers? Where is a good place to get one?
Many thanks - Christian.

hi only 1.6 petrol air cooled t25's had cable clutches so they are quite rare!
even though the hole in the bulkhead was fitted to all even 1991, its used to put the hydraulic pipe through!
i am sure they differ from bay window cables.
occasionally they appear on ebay.so worth a check.

if vw designed it with a cable why go to the trouble and expense to hydraulic it when there is no need??dugcati wrote:not sure if your able/upto doing it....might it be a good time to upgrade it to a hydraulic system?

Hydraulic is a lot smoother and easier than cable. I can push mine down with one finger!

As I said.. it might be an ideal time to upgrade -I know it would mean some work to get it done but the ease/reliability and maintenance free aspect can't be ruled out

Not as rare as you think,
GSF part number 71525 £11.75 plus vat & delivery
Gasure.UK part number 71525 £11.75 plus vat & delivery
Justkampers part number J10235 £9.74 plus vat & delivery
Also some of the early 2.0ltrs had cable clutches and any that have been converted from 1600 to 2.0ltr usually have cable clutches.

Re: clutch cable - 1981 1600 air cooled
Hi everyone - as usual many thanks for all the comments and help. I have ordered a new cable from just campers and hopefully it will come before I have to go back to work and i can get the van on the road again.
The fact that VW only made clutch cables for the 1600 Aircooled explains why everyone thought I was slighly derranged when I talked about a clutch cable for a T25!!
Hope its not going to be a bitch to swap over the cables - its a bit chilly out there and my knuckles kind of like having skin on them!
Christian.

Re: clutch cable - 1981 1600 air cooled
Hi - did the swap over yesterday. Wasn't too bad but a bit fiddly getting the new cable through the old bit of tubing by the clutch arm!!. One problem I had was that the cable was slightly too long. I had to make up a spacer (about 4cm) so that I could tighten the butterfly nut up enough to adjust the clutch. It seems to work o.k. so far, but was just wondering if anyone else had this problem as i can not see how I could have done anything wrong/daft that meant the cable was too long?
Thanks a lot, Christian.

It's better to use washers on the bow tube at the rear to shorten the cable. Did you get a good look at the bulkhead where the cable goes through? They often split.
Always as well to change the rear conduit too

Re: clutch cable - 1981 1600 air cooled
Hi Laurie,
Thanks for that. Will have a look at the bulkhead. From memory I think the metal collet at the top of the sleeve was sticking into the cab a bit (about a cm.). Will replace the spacer with washers, once I have bought some the right size. I had a load, but sods law the whole was the same size as the butterfly bolt....and they would not fit.
Thanks for the help. Christian.
