sticking accelerator (high idle)

Hi again all

For a few weeks now my accelerator has been sticking, ie idle speed is higher than should be. this continues until the engine is good and warm then it seems to settle in, it's almost as if there were a choke being pulled!

it's a 1980 Aircooled 2.0l petrol

Any advice will be appreciated, places to look, first point of call etc....

Well, make sure it's not the choke first!
After that I would give the carbs moving parts a spray of WD40 and then an oiling with engine oil, espicially the accellerator return spring.
If after doing that it still seems to stick then I would be looking at the accellerator pedal mechanism on the outside of the van but just underneath the accellerator pedal. Could probably do with a bit of lubrication too! Its a tad of a pain to get to and see but I'm quite sure the spray nozzle of a WD40 can will get there!

Probably choke though. If its going to idle high, it'll do it in cold weather when the spring inside the choke/s moves the most in such an extreme cold environment. You could do it by driving it until you consider it sufficient to be warmed up (but possibly still revving high) then slacken choke/s screws and turn chokes until they are wide open. Takes a bit of tweaking generally.

Thanks, although I should point out that there is no choke on my van. Unless there is an automatic choke hidden out of view? which I didn't think there was...?!

I havn't got chokes on mine but I have done a Weber conversion on mine with a short inlet manifold which doesn't require a choke to be used but unless you have some changes on your engine and carbs etc. then I would think it does have a choke. It's probably automatic to be honest and the whole idea of them is to let them do thier bit without knowing they are there!
Probably could do with adjusting a little by the sound of things a CovKid said.

stock solex carbs have an auto choke.
these can be adjusted. see the wiki.

dont change em for the single weber conversion as its shi.te

Check the cable out, it could be worn or frayed.

i have the same van with the same problem follow the advise and give it a major squirt with WD40 then some more and all should be fine.
