Non starter

Post by spet25 »

Help :x
I can never pass up a bargain even one that doesn't start.

It's a 1981 2ltr Aircooled.

Up to now I have fitted a eletronic fuel pump seems to work fine,

replaced a lazy starter motor.

It came without dizzy or ignition parts which I have replaced.

So I get spark and fuel and the starter turns it pretty quick, yet still doesn't even want to fire

What do I check next???????

Fresh fuel???

Try tipping a bit down the carbs....may get things moving.

I've got a rough guide of tdc and have tried to set the dizzy.

Ive also tried spinning it over while moving the dizzy slightly.

At the mo the air filter an breather tube are detached, will this make a difference?

I'll try the fuel on Sunday if I haven't slit my wrists.

thanks for the advice. I'll be asking again on Sunday proberly.

what dizzy are you using??

petrol (capful) down the left hand carb should get you going.

before pouring stuff down the carbs I would go back and re check the timing and leads are on the correct pots...... do you actually have any sparks??? disconnect the idle stabilisation unit (if it still has it) and connec tthe 2 plugs together...

Woo Hoo It's running of sorts!!

If the pedal is kept right to the floor it just ticks over, but it does of lot of huffing and puffing from the carbs. I thought if I move the dizzy a touch it my run better but it just cuts out.

There is white smoke from the tops of the carbs and out of the side of one. I'm hopefully going to post my first picture to show where the smoke is at the side, My questions are should there be a screw in there and will this help it reving correctly?

thanks for the help up to now, nearly there, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel

Fairly sure it should have a screw fitted in both carbs but think (from memory) that they were a blanking screw rather than for adjustment
The left hand carb (as u look in engine bay)is the one that does the work on two litre motors(tickover anyway) and it is linked to the other carb by the pipe that links the two inlet manifolds (ie u set the tickover on the left and the right side of the engine just works off that carb)

Thanks Tomsk

I'll start looking for a screw to blank it off.
