Carb Sync Bar

Post by albertramsbottom »

Hi

I seem to have an issue with the bar that syncs the two carbs on my air-cooled 2ltr 1982 bus.

The issue is that the bar comes of the lefthand nipple just above the lefthand carb. Now i have had a look at my mates bus and when you pull the bar too the right it seems to be sprung somehow, so when you let go it always sits back in the left-hnad nipple. However i cant seem to see where this is sprung from so i can check mine. Which is clearly not sprung.

The only thing i can see is that there is a couple of thin bars that go verticlly down from the bar to the carbs. I assume they are attached to the valves in the carbs. Any ideas, i have attached a couple of images with some questions under each
If anyone can help i would be very gratefull.

This is the bar that falls of on the left

This is the verticle bars each as far as i can see are the only things that could be sprung to keep the bar on the nipple. AM I right?

Hi,
A similar thing happened to me and what had happened was the throttle cable outer had pulled out of the bulkhead.
You can reach it through the offside wheel arch. It happened after pressing the throttle pedal to the floor.

All I did was reach in and re-align the outer into the hole in the bulkhead and I could then replace the bar correctly

Hope this helps
If you can't weld it try bostic!!

Hi

Thanks for that. I have just had a look and the throttle cable goes straight through the bulkhead but there doesnt appear to be any sort of grommet or platsic insert. So I think this might be the issue, just need to get the van on ramps so i can get to it.

Cheers again

Or laying somewhere near the spark plugs or back of tinware - favourite place for the spring to go.

They usually end up under the alternator and quite ineacessible, they are not available new but I have a stock of springs and I make a brass copy of the unit that works well, you can have both for £8.50 plus delivery.
