Has anyone got any experiance of the horrors of the head?

Do I just invest in a new block?

Plenty of info on Tech and the Wiki (you willnot need a Haynes you will need a Bentley Manual I imagine)

They don't have block's they have a crankcase and a barrels, so I hope your dad knows that..

Good luck, see you on't hills one day next year hopefully :)

Talk to Simon B as well...

Elite might be worth checking out for a rebuild... with a guarantee

Hi good luck with it! I'm not far up in Bolton for what its worth but I dont usually take on much "big" stuff myself. you can do the heads in situ but you need to get lucky with the exhaust bolts if you go down that route. they are usually rotten and snap/round etc. easier in the long run to remove and do it on the bench. does the engine turn over at all? can you get a compression tester on it and throw over the starter to determine the compression on the cylinders it may indicate which way to go. If there's poor compression may not be worth doing a top end fix of the seals etc. if water system is pressurising ie exhaust gas entering? test with a block tester to confirm maybe? I stayed stock with another 2.1 for mine but I managed to get one of the last VW recons.

True compression readings should be taken from a warm engine but would definately be a pointer.

On old Aircooled it was always number 3 under the oil cooler that had the poor compression readings!

Funny though, as Emma on Tech was just saying that number 1 was the hottest with her laser probe!

On Subarus it seems to be the front-left, also No. 1 I believe, which becomes rear-right in a T25 :)

You might get away with just doing the head gaskets on your engine. The gasket kits are cheap enough, just be careful the head studs don't snap. It is important to use the correct anti freeze, as it's this that rots the studs.
