Rev Counter Question

Much as i love the quiet I just can't get used to having the engine up the back and under loads of sound deadenning materials. Add this to the upside down gears election (in comparison to my every day Mondeo) and I sometime lose my way with the gear box. I have three solutions:
a/ Bash out the baffles in the silencer and drive with the window open.
b/Fit an in cab remotely mike'd sound system so i can adjust my audio perception of exhaust noise to suite my mood and on the day gear changeing capability.
c/ Fit an aftermarket Rev Counter.
C seems best but what will it sense? Will it Piggy back into a Distributer or ignition module connector or maybe trigger from a turn or two of wire areound an ignition lead.

I have to say I am a little surprised! My Aircooled 2 litre is very easy to listen too - you can't ignore it! Mind you, I have never driven a water cooled one, so maybe they are alot quieter??

what year is your van? and presume it is a petrol.

the later vans 84 ish onwards with buzzer of doom use the coil - wire to run the buzzer.
this is where the signal from the rev counter needs to connect .
so basically later vans already have the wire up at the dash for the revcounter .
earlier vans need a wire running from the engine bay to the dash

add an ignition feed , an earth and a sidelamp feed for illumination and all is ready.

Cheers for that Billy739. I should have stated that my an is a 1988 so it may have the wireing in the loom as you say. Time to get out the multimeter and Bentlys. Anyone know what a rassonable rev counter would cost?

anywhere from 15£ up new.
depends on what you like and where you want it.
you can buy a complete vw dash from around 70£ up to 120 peak times!

As Billy739 say's a Velle pod with rev counter is plug and play in an '88 van

works off the coil... it changed the way I drove the van for sure

4 or 5 wires, (sorry, can't just remember), a doddle to fit and like Kev said, it changed the way I drive the van.
