polo went bang

Just took the leaky polo up the road and whilst movign from 2nd to 3rd gear ir lost all power went bang ....looked in rear view mirror and thought some one had nicked the sun...massive amounts of black smoke...........what do you reckon that was all about ? Is it connected to leaky rad/pipes ?

is it a 1.9 diesel?
if so and u scrap it i could do with the alternator and waterpump pulley.

I is petrol and car is running I am not scrapping it ......just want to repair it
