gearbox question for 1.6 d

Post by dridgy »

i was about to fit an new guide and thrust bearing on my gearbox, i took the guide off and and noticed that the seal is leaking slightly around the gearbox shaft.
when i grabbed the shaft i noticed it had a fair bit of movement in it, mybe 1 to 2mm side to side.
is it ment to have movememnt in it or is something worn out?

going to order a new seal but will this cure it?

cheers
john.

If you mean 1-2mm at the end of the shaft mine was like that when I replaced my seal, no leaks so far......
If you mean whilst holding the end there is that much play at the base, that does sound a little excessive.......
check the spiggot bearings OK or there is one in there as mine wasn't. They are only about £3.00 new.....and fill the seal lips with grease......... I used a cut down washing line pole to knock it in square, it was the exact diameter needed.....
hope this helps................

play in shaft

Post by dridgy »

i checked again, and its about 1mm play in the shaft, is is when you hold the shaft and move it from side to side, as i do this the seal at the base of the shaft starts to weep very slightly, but the seal is old and needs replacing anyway.

just wanted to know if the shaft usually has a bit of play in it i suppose once the engine is fitted there would be no play as the spigot bearing would hold it in line?

cheers

john
