Post by mark206000 »

Hi,

Done a search and can't seem to find a good anser to what oil to put in.

Spotted that quantum 15/40 was mentioned, would this be the stuff ?

Cheers :)

Well this has been done to death, have you looked in the "Wiki"?

Yes VW's own Quantum 15w40 is what I use/used, it very good and cheap even from VW...
Thats for a good engine in good nick.

For engines that are a bit tired or get used hard (ie: hot), then something like Castrol GTX 15w50 works well and a 20w50 usually cures any weak tappets..
DONT be tempted to use anything thinner.. they dont like it.. unless you plan on being in a very cold climate...
"longlife" synthetics are not needed..
Better to change the oil often (4k-6k miles) and use a quality filter too..

I rather prefer a 20w/50 as it quietens the tappets and is good for the older engines especialy with 100k plus mileage

only use Castrol or Duckhams...a good "branded" mineral oil

KwikSave are doing a 20/50 for £6.50 !!

I take it KwikSave wouldn't sell anything that is complete rubbish, and anyway at that price you can afford to change it twice as often as is normal :)

Ideal for those who's motors need topping up every so often too.

Er.. but check at VW... last time I bought some, I think it was only about 7 quid also... SO why bother with cheapo stuff...
A tip.. look on the packet, see if it meets API SG or above (Quantum is SJ) Most cheap stuff is lower..

Good point.

The main dealers can supprise you in either direction.

Like, just the screw in whip bit of a Scirocco radio aerial = £60

or

A pair of Scirocco ventilated front disks = £24 for the pair !!
