URGENT 1.9 AEF engine conversion, do i swap pump.

Post by dridgy »

Im about to put in a 1.9 NA AEF engine from a polo.
The injection pump is different to my old 1.6 pump, the 1.9 has a idle boost valve on it, with a vacum pipe conection.
Can i use my old pump, and will the engine lose power because the pumps off a 1.6 or can i somehow make the new pump work?
any help appreciated.

is there any other stuff i may need to do before i put the engine in?
also will oil leak out of the rocker box cover as it has a oil fill hole with a cap, or would this need welding up maybe?

thanks

john

The 1.6 pump will fit and run but it won't run as it should, 1.6 is single stage injectors, 1.9 are twin stage injectors. Get it running with its proper pump.

The cam covers always leak a bit of oil, the oil filler cap won't be a problem.

AEF engine

Ring me tomorrow,
You do use 1.9 pump but now you have taken it off, there should be a little black box with two wires coming out which go to the fuel cut off switch.
I think one is white and one is black, these are for the wires you need to connect up,one goes to earth the other to your origanal fuel cut off supply wire. All the other wires to the pump dont need to connected to make it work. There is a no oil pressure switch in 1.9 head you need to use your own, there should be a blanking plug(I think it is 5mm allen key to remove). This engine should have a glow plug control unit, but this is easy bypassed with a resistor (about 15pence From maplin). This engine needs glow plugs on to start it even when the engine is warm.Your origanal one did not it took a reading off a temp sender unit and sent it to the relay. This wire should be connected to a resistor and then to earth. You could just not bother using this wire but your glow plug light will stop until you start it.By doing it with a resistor you can make it stop on as long or short a time as you want depending on the size of the resistor(mine stops on for about 7 secs)starts first time everytime no matter how cold or warm it is.My engine has now been in and running for about 17 months.
