Gearbox Rebuild-How difficult can it be ???

My 4 speed 091 box has broken after 160,000 miles. Jamed in gear but no drive.
I have spoken to a few people about rebuilding it

Shiplake £350 ish seems to know what he is doing I have heard some good and bad feed back.

Peter at the cogbox £500 ish again knows what he is doing I have heard good feedback.

A1 transmissions Bolton recommended he charges £165 + parts.

The gearbox is out and in my garage. I have read Bentley
And spoke to a friend who works at a Citroen Main dealer who says there is nothing to rebuilding gearboxes. He has rebuilt VW and Porsche boxes

So here goes a DIY rebuild.

Havent heard bad about shiplake, have heard bad about cogbox.. 165 sounds rather cheap!!!

Some of the parts are fairly dear - like just the hub for 3rd/4th gears is £160+vat so a quote for 165 + parts isn't necessarily going to be the good deal it appears at first.
I had mine rebuilt a few years ago at a local transmission specialist and it cost me £340. The 3/4 hub failed recently and the same guy was good enough to replace it for just the cost of the part. Cogbox seem to have always had a good reputation and their price may just reflect where they are based ie London. The regional rebuilders seem to be much the same in price ie in the 300-400 area.

I am having trouble
I can't get the shift shaft out I asume that it has to be in neutral
to get it out trouble is my box is stuck in gear.

ANY Ideas

I have rebuilt a couple of boxes in my time,how anyone can say it's easy I don't know,I found the older boxes ,like Morris 1000 are worth doing but later ones are so critical as regards clearances and the price of spares ,if you can get them hardly makes it worthwhile,saying that I know that if the one on my van wanted doing I would have a go if I couldn't get a 2nd hand one.Looking at the pics in Haynes,and thats all there is, it looks like the box will come apart,maybe you can get the shaft out then but I'm looking at a 1.9 4/5 speed box.

I believe it's a matter of brute force but I'd ring Dave at Shiplake and ask him cos I know he had to ask cogbox first time he came across it : )
