Anyone got a piccy of how push rod tube spring locates ?

Hi there,
I've just had to do a head swap on a 2 litre Aircooled and refitted new push rod seals as suggested.

All was fine until I tried to then get the push rods tubes back in - as it seemed a very tight fit and I guess some aren't seated properly as when I started it oil started pi**ing out!

Has anyone got a picture of how the spring that holds the push rod tubes in place - as I'm not sure if I've got it correct!

Did you set the tubes down with an appropriately sized drift eg a socket and a firm tap? The spring device stops the tubes from coming loose. It sort of fits round the inside of the head casting and the flat bits fit into the splits in the rocker mounting bosses. I don't have a pic at the moment but could take some at the weekend when I will be doing some work on mine.

I actually used an old push rod tube as a drift and had to whack it quite hard with a rubber mallet to get them in.

Not that I did, but do you lube the seals with a little oil to help them slide in better?

My guess is that I've damaged the seals when locating the tubes, as the Spring is located exactly as you desribed.

So I guess I've got to try and wiggle the tubes out again (is there a knack to this with the engine in?), then fit new outer seals and try again?

Or could I just try to seal them with some Silicone?

Try putting a smear of Hylomar on the seals and in the casings ends, use a piece of tight fitting broom shank (shaped to fit), insert in end of each tube in turn, make absolutely certain the tube is aligned correctly then rock the tube as you push until the tube pops in. You may have to put a pipe grip on the middle of the tube to be able to rock it as you push in (GENTLY).

Oh yes! one more thing, use only genuine VW seals.
