My new camper - and it's old rust!!!

Post by MrDenis »

Hi there - new around here - took delivery of my first camper yesterday - it's also my first manual car so everything's slightly big and scary - and a bit rusty!

It's supposedly a Devon but I'm dubious, nothing fits too well and the carpentry's shoddy, though it does have a dog eared sticker on the dash! It does have a working sink but a stove that I can't seem to fire up.

I'm not complaining mind - I got it for a good price and am happy to spend a little time fixing it up.

I was hoping if I posted a few pics of the rust somebody might be able to give me an indication of how much work is needed - I've read some of the wiki but most of it goes over my head

I'm also posting a couple of pictures of glue mastic type stuff that's on the interior in the hope somebody can give me pointers on how to remove it

Please be gentle - I've never had any responsibility for motor before and as such my grasp of the lingo is not what it should be

Cheers

D x

Welcome!!

I'm a new t25 owner myself ~ althouh had type 1's a plenty!!

I've had mine about 14 days now and is in about the same condition!

What year is yours and Aircooled or h20? and how much MOT?

The rust doesn't look That bad.. I've got a great guy in the north-west for welding.. where are you?

It's E reg so '88 I think - it's just passed an MOT so I'm in no rush to sort stuff out but was looking more for preventative measures to aid longevity

I'm in S. London so North West is a bit of a trip - is welding the only answer?

naah, panel replacement only when necessary! I have been told though on t25's that if there is rust on the outside of rear arches, along the seams, then they need a new panel..

mines an '83, with 12months mot.. just peeled back drivers floormat tonight though, looks like a f&^king teabag!

If there is anybody in my part of the world who could give me some pointers that would be great - if not I don't think the drive to Nottingham could be any worse than my first journey back from Maidstone!

Cheers - I'll try the holding down trick on the Glensco - I've added an interior pic to my first post - what you can't see is the headlining is hardboard and doesn't fit 100%

I'm near Purley if you want to have a look at another van (I think you need a few more posts till you can pm me) but mine is not a known make. It has a leisure battery on a split charge relay, a fridge and an oven. Totally different from yours but could give you some idea. Check the photos on my web site to see what it used to look like (really must add those newer shots)

Putney's not so far off - we're in Brixton/Herne Hill - there's quite a few campers around our way - I'm hoping to bump into one of the owners and get a proper squint into one of theirs soon!

Cheers DiscoDave - gas works just fine all 3 hobs & a grill - bonus!

Mr Tick - Can't find any details of a teccie weekend on the forums - is it a funny handshake affair?

I think I am one of those other van's you have spotted in the Brixton area. I'm pretty much in the same situation as you. Bought a '89 Lhd, Westy hi-top about 3 months ago. Haven't owned anything with an engine since I learnt to drive 15 years ago and have learnt everything I know from reading this site and the wiki (thank you everyone). This is my first post.

I'll try and personal message you. Happy to meet up in Brixton and pass on everything I know (that won't take long).

Dave
